Easy sew DIY clutch wristlet with magnetic snap.  I love to make handbags.  In fact they are my favorite things to sew.  I never take a large bulky handbag out at night.  Instead I prefer a small wristlet that will hold my essentials. I also love color.  I always carry colorful bags wherever I go. it is a nice contrast to the blues, grays and blacks I wear at work.

In that vein I created this easy sew DIY clutch wristlet.  This little bag only requires beginner sewing skills and a few of my favorite bag making accessories.  For a complete list of my favorite bag making supplies click here.  This clutch wristlet is supper easy to make and can be made in just a few hours. You can make this bag in the afternoon to be ready for a night on the town.

I used fabric from my remnant stash for this project but you can get exactly what you need at HobbyLobby or Fabric.com. I chose a woven cotton fabric for this wristlet.  Quilting cotton is perfect for this easy sew DIY clutch wristlet.  It is supported by the interfacing and fusible fleece.

If you are not familiar with interfacing like the Pellon 808 and the fusible fleece suggested for this project, interfacing is used on the unseen or “wrong” side of fabrics to make fabric more rigid. Pellon 808 is a medium weight interfacing that adds structure to your bag.  The fusible fleece also adds structure and a little cushiness to the bag.  Both of these interfacings re fusible.  In other words they have glue on one side that when ironed sticks to the fabric so that when you are sewing you can treat the fabric and interfacing as a single unit.

I suggest Amazon for the bag making accessories that I used in creating this beautiful easy sew DIY clutch wristlet. This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What you will Need:

  • 1/2 yd. exterior fabric
  • 1/2 yd. lining fabric
  • 1/2 yd fusible interfacing like Pellon 808
  • 1/2 yd. Fusible fleece
  • 1 1/2″ D-ring
  • 1 1/2″ swivel clip
  • 1 Magnetic Snap
  • Standard Sewing supplies

Step 1: Easy Sew DIY Clutch Wristlet

  • Cut 2 exterior and 2 lining pieces that measure 11″ x 7″
  • Cut 2 exterior pieces that measure 8 3/4″ x 4″
  • Cut 2 pieces of interfacing and fusible fleece that measure 11″ x 7″
  • Cut 2 pieces of interfacing and fusible fleece that measure 8 3/4″ x 4″
  • Cut 1 Piece of exterior fabric that measures 2″ x 15″ for the strap
  • Cut 1 piece of exterior fabric that measures 2″ x 3″ for the D ring.

Step 2: Easy Sew DIY Clutch Wristlet

Fuse the interfacing and the fleece to the exterior pieces.  The interfacing will come with instructions on how to fuse it to the fabric but it is a simple process.  You simply place the glue side of the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric and press with a hot iron until it fuses together.  In this case, fuse the Pellon 808 first and the fleece on top of that.

Once you have fused the interfacings to the fabric, round the bottom corners of each piece.  Also round the corners of the lining fabric.  You can use a drinking glass for this purpose.

Step 3: Easy Sew DIY Clutch Wristlet

Create the strap.  I have used decorator weight fabric in my project so I did not add interfacing to the strap but if you use a lighter weight cotton which is also a good choice you will want to interface it with the Pellon 808.

Fold the strap piece in half lengthwise and press.  Open the strap and fold the raw edges so that they meet in the center and press.  Fold the strap in half again lengthwise so that all of the raw edges are enclosed and press.

Insert the strap through the swivel clip.  Sew the ends right sides together and refold the strap ends.  Top stitch around the strap on both sides moving the swivel clip as you go.  Once you have finished the top stitching, sew across the strap where the swivel clip is to secure it.

Create the D-ring tab by folding it in the same way but leaving the raw edges. Insert the tab into the D-ring and sew across the fabric to secure it.

Attach the D-Ring to the side of one of the outer fabric pieces so that the D-ring is facing in toward the center and the raw edges are on the same side.  Baste to the fabric using 1/8″ seam allowance.

Sew the two small pieces right sides together using 1/4″ seam allowance. Just sew around the curved edge and sides and leave the top open.  Turn right sides out and top stitch around the curves and the sides. the top stitching creates a more finished and professional look.

Step 8: Easy Sew DIY Clutch Wristlet

Add one half of the magnetic snap to the center bottom of the flap, just above the top stitching.  Adding the magnetic snap is a simple process. The snap has two prongs that will be inserted through the fabric and interfacing on the underside of the flap. Determine where you would like to add the snap.  Use the backing of the snap mark where the prongs will go.  Cut two slits for the prongs and insert the snap into the slits.  Add the snap backing to the prongs on the wrong side and fold the prongs to the sides securing the snap.Easy sew DIY clutch wristlet

Step 9: Easy Sew DIY Clutch Wristlet

Add the smaller flap piece to one side of the main body bag making sure that it is centered. Sew along the edge using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 10: Easy Sew DIY Clutch Wristlet

Add the other half of the magnetic snap to the main body piece that is opposite from the one you sewed the flap to. Add it in the same way you added the snap to the flap.  Make sure that the snap is centered and that the flap can fold over and securely snap together.

Step 11: Easy Sew DIY Clutch Wristlet

Insert the main bag piece and the attached flap into the lining so that the exterior fabric and the lining fabric are right sides together.  Sew around the rim.  Turn the bag right sides out through the opening that you left in the lining.
