Easy Sew Reversible Chair Pad

Easy Sew Reversible Chair Pad

I finally decided to make a chair cushion for the chair I use to sit in while I am sewing.  Until now I was sitting on two old pillows.  It was not very comfortable but now I am sitting on a plush easy sew reversible chair pad that only took a short time to make.  Here is how I did it:

What you will Need:

  • 1/2 yd. Primary fabric
  • 1/2 yd. Secondary Fabric
  • 8 Covered Buttons (Optional)
  • Large piece of paper
  • Pencil
  • Standard Sewing Supplies

What you will Need

Step 1: Easy Sew Reversible Chair Pad

The first step is to make a pattern.  The best way to do this is to take a large piece of paper.  I used the roll up type you wrap packages with. Trace out the shape of the chair marking the location of the ties.  Add 1″ to the outline of the chair to accommodate the seam allowance and the fiberfill that you will use to stuff the pad.

Step 2: Easy Sew Reversible Chair Pad

Cut 4 Chair Ties

Cut four strips that measure 3″ x 16″ that will serve as your ties to hold the pad to the chair.  Cut the pad from the pattern you made from each of the two fabrics you have chosen.

Step 3: Easy Sew Reversible Chair Pad

Measure for the location of the buttons by dividing the pattern into three pieces horizontally and vertically.  Where the lines meet mark with an x using a disappearing ink pen.  You could also simply measure from top to bottom and side to side.

Step 4: Easy Sew Reversible Chair Pad

To make the ties, fold the strips lengthwise and sew using 1/4″ seam allowance.  Fold the raw edges of one end under 1/4″ then top stitch around the three sides of the tie, leaving one short end open.  Do this for all four ties.

Step 5: Easy Sew Reversible Chair Pad

Place the cushion front and back right sides together with the ties sandwiched between the two and at the location you previously marked. Sew around the perimeter of the pad making sure to catch the ties and leaving an opening to add the fiberfill.

Step 6: Easy Sew Reversible Chair Pad

Add the fiberfill to the level you would like and sew the opening closed using mattress stitch.

Step 7: Easy Sew Reversible Chair Pad

Cover the buttons according to manufacturers instructions.  This is an easy process that uses scraps of fabric to cover the buttons and a snap on shank.  No tools are necessary.

Add the buttons to the pad at the locations you previously marked using a strong thread or cord.  I like to use outdoor polyester thread for this because it is very strong.  I like to tie the thread around the button shank and then push the needle through the pad making sure it comes out the other side at the marking.  I then add another covered button and go back through the pad near the hole I just created pulling the thread taut.  Tie the thread off around the button making a knot.  Once all four are finished you have completed your easy sew reversible chair pad.
