I love hand towels that hang easily from my oven and dishwasher without fear that they will fall off the minute I use them.  I also like the idea of adding a little pattern to otherwise plain dollar store hand towels. This tutorial solves both issues in an easy to sew pattern.  It will also take away the fear of adding button holes to your projects and allows you to use some of those scraps and remnants you have in your stash or if you like you can head over to fabric.com or use this 40% off coupon from Hobby Lobby to purchase the perfect fabric for your project. With three dollar store towels, craft buttons and a remnant you too can make these super handy hanging hand towels.

What you will Need:

  • Dollar store kitchen hand towels
  • Coordinating remnant fabric or fat quarters
  • Light weight fusible interfacing like Pellon SF 101
  • Coordinating craft buttons
  • Button hole attachment for your machine
  • Standard sewing supplies

Step 1: Super Handy Hanging Hand Towels

For each towel, cut two rectangles measuring 7 1/4″ x 4 3/4″ for the top band and one rectangle measuring 4″ x 10″ for the tab.  Also cut one piece of lightweight interfacing measuring 4″ x 10″ that you will fuse to the tab.

Step 2: Super Handy Hanging Hand Towels

Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the tab piece.  With right sides together, fold the tab in half lengthwise.  Using 1/2″ seam allowance sew the long edge and one short edge together.  Trim the seam allowance to 1/4″ and clip the corners.  Turn the tab right side out.

Place the band pieces right sides together. Insert the unfinished end of the tab between the two pieces in the center of the long side of the band.  Using 1/2″ seam allowance sew a seam across the side with the tab.  Press.

Step 5: Super Handy Hanging Hand Towels

Fold your hand towel so that it measures 6″ across and then again to the length you would like.  I folded mine in half.  My dollar store towels measured 6″ across and 12″ long after folding.  Press the folds.

Step 6: Super Handy Hanging Hand Towels

Fold over the top band on each side by 5/8″ so that the band is 6″ wide to match your towel.

Step 7: Super Handy Hanging Hand Towels

Fold the long edges of the top band by 5/8″ and press in place.  Place the Band over the folded edge of your towel so that the sides of the band are even with the sides of the towel and the tab is facing the top. Stitch across the band through all layers.  Topstitch along the top and sides.

Sew the button about halfway down the band in the center.  The loop with the buttonhole will fit over this button to secure the towel.
