Free Bi Fold Wallet Tutorial

I took a Craftsy class on Wallet making called Sewing Wallets Step by Step a while back and I just loved it.  It was a very well done class and worth the sale price I paid for it.  Since then I have been making wallets like crazy.  They are much easier than you think to make them.  I would recommend that you take the class if you can otherwise I came across a terrific free pattern from Modest Maven that I am replicating here.  It is very much like one of the three wallets portrayed in the class so I thought I would give this one a try.  I hope you will too.  It takes just an hour or so to make and you can make it using remnants if you want too.  I did.

What you will Need:

  • 1/4 yd. exterior fabric
  • 1/4 yd. Interior Fabric
  • 1/4 yd. fusible interfacing like Pellon 808
  • Plastic Snap
  • Standard Sewing Supplies

Step 1: Free Bi Fold Wallet Tutorial

Cut the fabrics and interfacing as follows:

  • Main Exterior and Interior pieces: cut two 9″x 5″ rectangles
  • Cut two 9″ x 5″ pieces of interfacing
  • Cut two 9″x 4 1/2″ rectangles for the inside bill lining (do not stabilize).
  • Cut one 3 1/2″x 3 1/2″ square for the tab
  • Cut one 3 1/2″x 3 1/2″ square piece of interfacing for the tab
  • Cut two 5″ x 19″interior pieces for credit card pockets (do not stabilize).

Step 2: Free Bi Fold Wallet Tutorial

Fuse the Main exterior and interior pieces with interfacing.  Fuse the tab with interfacing as well.

Step 3: Free Bi Fold Wallet Tutorial

Make the tab by folding it in half and sew the top and side, leaving bottom open. Clip corners, turn right-side out, press and top stitch.

Step 4: Free Bi Fold Wallet Tutorial

Make the lining. Lay the lining pieces right-sides together and sew sides and bottom, leaving 3″ opening at bottom. Top is completely unsewn.

Step 5: Free Bi Fold Wallet Tutorial

Make the pockets by folding the short side 4″ to the wrong side.  Then fold the pockets accordion style so that they are offset and can hold a credit card in each fold.  There should be 4 pockets made from each 5″ x 19″ piece.  Trim off the excess so that each finished pocket piece measures 4″ x 5″.  Top stitch each pocket edge.

Step 9: Free Bi Fold Wallet Tutorial

Insert the outer wallet into the bill lining you previously created. Fold the bottom of the outer piece an inch so it’ll fit in the lining pouch. Sew around the top edge using 1/2″ seam allowance.

Step 10: Free Bi Fold Wallet Tutorial

Press the wallet and top stitch around entire opening.  Then top stitch along the sides and bottom.

Step 11: Free Bi Fold Wallet Tutorial

Attach the snap to the tab and to the body. I used plastic snaps with a snap setter but you can use sew-on snaps or Velcro. If using magnetic purse snaps, you’ll want to attach the snap piece to the tab before sewing the tab.

Step 12: Free Bi Fold Wallet Tutorial

Insert credit cards and bills and you have completed your free bi fold wallet.

  1. I would like to see something like this made with a zipper on one end for whatever and a slot in the other end for a cell phone ( maybe with a tab or magnetic snap and still a place for paper money. Also instead of a tab just to close have it long enough to go around belt loop or belt. I’m trying. I get so far and blank out. Thanks for letting me blow steam. It’s after one am so I might not be making sense. Thanks
