I love pillow. I have many throughout my house so I thought I would share with you how to make a bolster pillow cover for your home. This is a simple sewing project that anyone with basic sewing skills can make using just straight stitches. Even though the pillow is round the stitching is straight for this adorable little pillow cover. I added some piping to this pillow cover to give it a little pizzazz but it is not hard to add. If you would like a tutorial on a standard envelope pillow cover check out my tutorial here.
I used some pre-made piping for my pillow cover and fabric I purchased at JOANN Fabric & Craft Storesbut you could make your own piping or head to fabric.com or onlinefabricstore.net for fabric and piping for your project. What you will Need: How to Make a Bolster Pillow Cover
- 14″ x 5″ Bolster insert
- 1/4 yd primary fabric
- 1/4 yd coordinating fabric for ends
- 3/8″ velvet or other ribbon
- 1 package pre-made piping or make your own
- Standard Sewing Supplies
Step 1: Cut your Fabrics
Cut a piece of primary fabric that measures 14 1/2″ x 19″. Cut two coordinating pieces of fabric that measure 20″ x 4″. You should have two pieces of piping that measure 19″ for each end. Finally, cut two pieces of ribbon that measure 25″ each.
Step 2: Prepare your Coordinating Fabric
Fold the short ends in by 1/2″ on each side and stitch. Take one long end create a casing by folding the raw edge down by 1″ and under by 1/4″ and stitch. Repeat for both pieces.
Step 3: Add the Piping
Place the piping edge along the short side of the primary fabric and stitch. Repeat for the other end.
Step 4: Add the Coordinating Fabric
Place the coordinating fabric right sides together on top of the piping and the primary fabric. Stitch. Repeat for the other end.
Step 5: Stitch the Cover
With right sides together stitch long ends of the primary fabric together. Do not stitch the coordinating fabric together.
Step 6: Insert the Ribbon
Using a safety pin or a bodkin insert the ribbon through the casing in the ends of the coordinating fabric. Insert the pillow insert into the case and tie up the ribbon. You have now finished your bolster pillow cover.
