How to Make a Breathable Face Mask

How to make a breathable face mask

I have made a couple of face masks on the blog but decided to make one that was a little more breathable now that I seem to be wearing it more and more.  It  looks like mask wearing is going to be a part of my daily routine for the foreseeable future so i thought this pattern was a little bit better than the rest.  As usual the pattern is free and so is the tutorial.  This mask is more of a 3d style than my other mask patterns so I hope you like it.

For this project I am using fabric to represent my beloved St. Louis Cardinals.  I purchased this fabric from Fabric.com but you can use any cotton fabric that you can purchase from JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores, Hobby Lobby, or onlinefabricstore.net or your local fabric store. You can even delve into your stash for this project because it only requires a small amount.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What you will Need: How to Make a Breathable Face Mask

Step 1: Cut your fabrics

Using the pattern piece cut one outer and one lining piece.  Cut two additional outer pieces that measure 3 5/8″ x 2 1/2″ to use as the binding. split your elastic in two so that you have two 10″ pieces.

Step 2: Mark your pleats

Take the pattern piece and fold it in half lengthwise then in half again.  Use the folds to mark the sides of both fabric pieces using a Frixion heat erasable pen or some other erasable pen.  Use the marks to fold the pleats toward the center mark as shown. Press and clip or pin.  I use wonder clips here but you could use pins if you like.  Stitch the pleats. Do this for the outer fabric and the lining fabric.

Step 3: Stitch the center

Fold each of the fabrics in half at the center so that they are right sides together.  Stitch all along the curve using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 4: Stitch the outer Fabric to the lining

Open the pieces and place the outer fabric and the lining fabric right sides together.  Clip or pin.  Stitch along the top and the bottom of the mask using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Turn right sides out through one of the open sides. Press well.

Step 6: Add the Binding

Take the 3 5/8″ x 2 1/2″ pieces and place them right sides together on the outer fabric sides and clip.  Wrap the excess fabric around to the other side.  Stitch the binding to the end through all layers.  Fold the binding over.  Fold under the raw edges so that they cover the previous stitching.  Stitch the binding again to secure.

Step 7: Add the Elastic

Feed the elastic through the binding using a bodkin or a safety pin.  Either tie or stitch the ends together and feed the ends back through the binding.  You have now finished your breathable face mask.
