How to Make a Christmas Patchwork Star

I love these patchwork stars.  They are not only easy to make they are perfect for the Christmas season.  All you need is a little fabric, some twine and some polyfill and you can create these terrific patchwork star decorations for your home this Christmas season.  I know patchwork seems intimidating at first but really with this little project you will easily get the hang of it.  Believe me, you do not need to be a quilter to do this project.  The other nice thing about this Christmas sewing craft is that it only takes about half hour to make and the results are stunning.  Depending on the fabrics you use your stars can be anything you want them to be.

I, of course used remnants from my stash as always but if you want a more cohesive looking star, you can head over to Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to find the perfect fabrics for you.  In fact, this is a perfect project for fat quarters or charm packs.  Just choose a variety of Christmas prints and you are on your way.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra charge to you.

What you will Need:

• Pattern
• 4 different remnants or fat quarters of Christmas themed fabric
• Small piece if twine or ribbon
• Polyester fiberfill
• 2 Buttons
• Standard sewing supplies

Step 1: How to Make a Christmas Patchwork Star

Print and cut out the pattern.  Decide which fabrics you will use for your patchwork and which will be your back and cut out the pieces accordingly.  I was able to cut out three diamond shapes at a time to make the cutting go faster.

Step 2: How to Make a Christmas Patchwork Star

Press the pattern pieces and lay them out on your cutting table the way you are going to sew them.  You will be piecing the bottom half of the star then the top half of the star first.

Step 3: How to Make a Christmas Patchwork Star

Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew two of your diamond pieces right sides together along one side.

Step 4: How to Make a Christmas Patchwork Star

Sew the third diamond to the first two right sides together making the bottom of your star.  Repeat for the top of your star.

Step 5: How to Make a Christmas Patchwork Star

Sew the two halves together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  This will create the patchwork side of your star.

Step 6: How to Make a Christmas Patchwork Star

With right sides together pin the backing piece to the patchwork piece. Insert a loop of twine inside the two halves to act as the hanger and sew all the way around using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Leave an opening on one leg of the star for turning and stuffing.  Clip the points making sure not to cut through the stitching.

Step 7: How to Make a Christmas Patchwork Star

Turn the star right side out and poke out the points.  Stuff the star with the polyester fiberfill making sure the points are stuffed.

Step 8: How to Make a Christmas Patchwork Star

Sew the opening closed using ladder stitch.  If you are unfamiliar with ladder stitch take a look at this video.

Step 9: How to Make a Christmas Patchwork Star

Place a button at the center of the patchwork piece and one at the center of the backing piece and sew them together through the star and stuffing.  You have now completed your Christmas Patchwork Star.
