How to Make a Clam Open Wide Zipper Pouch

Zipper pouches are so fun to make.  This clam open wide zipper pouch is simple to make and really functional for its small size.  You could even change the size of this pouch by changing the dimensions of the pattern.  The steps are still the same.  Not much is needed for this cute little zipper pouch.  All you need is four pieces of fabric, two pieces of interfacing and a zipper.  Of course standard sewing supplies are needed as well but that is it.  I really like this little pouch to store my wonder clips but you could use it for anything.

This project really only requires scrap fabric from your stash.  There is just a small amount of fabric that is needed for this project,  If you don’t have a stash of fabrics like I do you can head to JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores, Fabric.com, Hobby Lobby, or onlinefabricstore.net to get exactly what you need.  You can also get the interfacing and zippers there too.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What you will Need Clam Pouch

Step 1: Cut and Fuse your Fabrics

Cut two outer, lining and interfacing pieces that measure 8 3/4″ x 3 1/2″.  Fuse the SF 101 to the wrong side of the outer fabric following the manufacturer’s instructions.  Using the pattern piece cut the outer and lining pieces.

Cut your fabrics

Step 2: Add the Zipper to your Pouch

Fold the outer and lining fabrics in half widthwise in order to find the center.  Mark the center.  Find the center of the zipper by folding it in half as well and mark.  Place your outer fabric right sides up on your work surface.  Place your zipper right sides down on the outer fabric matching the center marks.  Lay the lining piece right sides down on the zipper also matching the center marks and pin.  Stitch through all layers using your zipper foot.  Open right sides out and press.  Clip or pin the bottoms together.  Add the other side of the zipper in the same way.  Topstitch along both sides of the zipper only.

Step 3: Stitch the Sides of your Zipper Pouch

Place the outer pieces and the lining pieces right sides together with the zipper in the middle.  Stitch along both sides using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Trim the seams. Unzip the zipper.

Step 4: Stitch the Bottoms of your Zipper Pouch

Pinch the outer sides together and the lining sides together matching the seams.  Clip or pin.  Stitch along the outer bottom that was created when you matched the sides.  Stitch along the lining bottom in the same way but leave an opening for turning the piece right sides out in a later step.

Sew the sides

Step 5: Box the Corners of your Zipper Pouch

You will notice that there are four corners with holes.  Pinch the sides and bottom to create a straight line on the outer fabric.  Do the same for the corresponding lining fabric.  Clip the lining and outer fabric pieces together using wonder clips or pin.  Repeat for the other side.  Stitch along the lines using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Trim the seams.  Turn the pouch right sides out through the opening in the lining and the zipper.

Step 6: Stitch the Opening Closed

Hand stitch the opening closed using ladder or invisible stitch.  Press the pouch.  You have now finished your clam open wide zipper pouch.
