How to Make a Cube Zipper Pouch
This cube zipper pouch is a terrific little pouch to store all kinds of small things. It is a simple sewing project that can be made in just a few hours. The thing I like most about this cube zipper pouch is that opens up wide. You can see everything in it at a glance. This is a fun and functional sewing project. I honestly just love this little pouch. It takes a little bit of skill because of the zipper but with patience you can create this little pouch in no time.
I chose a bright floral fabric for my cube zipper pouch that I purchased at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores along with a bright orange Kona cotton for the lining. You could choose any cotton fabric that you like for your project. I recommend Hobby Lobby, Fabric.com and OnlineFabricStore.net as great sources for just about any fabric you could want for this project. What you will need: how to make a cube zipper pouch
- Pattern Piece you can get by clicking on this link
- 1/2 yd outer and lining fabric
- 1 20″ #5 zipper that you will shorten
- 1/2 yd High Loft Fusible Fleece like Pellon TP971F
- 1/2 yd Pellon SF 101 Interfacing or similar woven interfacing
- 2 Zipper sliders
Step 1: Cut your cube zipper pouch fabrics
From the larger pattern piece cut one outer and one lining piece on the double fold. From the smaller pattern piece cut the fleece and SF101 on the double fold. Cut a handle piece that measures 7 7/8″ x 2 3/8″ and two tab pieces that measure 2″ x 1 1/2″ from the outer fabric. Cut a fleece piece for the handle that is __” smaller. From the lining and SF101 cut two pieces that measure 6″ x 5 3/8″ for the sides.
Step 2: Fuse the Interfacing
Fuse the Fleece to the outer fabric pieces and and the SF101 to the lining pieces.
Step 3: Create the Handle and tabs
Fold the seam allowance so that it is even with the fleece on the long sides and press.Fold the handle in half lengthwise and press again.To create the tabs fold the long edges into the center and press. Fold in half and press again. Top stitch along both edges and along both edges of the handle.
Step 4: Add the handle to the pouch
Take one side of the pouch and measure 1 3/8″ from the top down and 7/8″ from the indented edge and make a mark using an erasable pen. Repeat for the other side. Fold under the raw edges of the handle and place the ends on the marks you just made and pin. Stitch a small box on the ends of the handle to secure it in place.
Step 5: Add the Zipper
Fold the pouch in half lengthwise to find the center. Mark the center of both ends of the pouch. Find the center of the zipper by folding it in half. Mark it as well on both sides. Pin one side of the zipper right side down onto one end of the pouch from tip to tip. You will have to notch the zipper to allow it to lay flat on the curved corners of the pouch. Stitch the zipper in place. Take the zipper apart. Place the other side of the zipper at the other end of the pouch in the same way and stitch.
Step 5: Add the lining
Find the center of the lining and line it up with both ends of the pouch at the zipper right sides together. Pin. Stitch the lining in place at both ends. Turn the pouch right sides out and press. Top stitch along the zipper on both sides.
Step 5: Add the tabs (OPtional)
Fold the pouch in half widthwise to find the center of the indent part of the pouch. Mark the center. Fold the tabs in half and pin them on each side of the indent part of the pouch. Stitch around the raw edges of the indent using a 3/8″ seam allowance on both sides.
Step 5: Add the Zipper sliders
Place two zipper sliders onto the zipper. Place one on one end and the other on the other end. This way they will face each other. Close the bag and turn it wrong sides out.
Step 6: Stitch the bottom
Pinch the raw edges together with the zipper ends sandwiched between them. Pin. Stitch around the raw edges using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Clip off the excess zipper.
Step 7: create the sides
Fold the lining pieces for the sides in half lengthwise but leaving 3/8″ at the top and right sides together. Press. Stitch along the short sides using a 3/8 seam allowance. Turn right sides out and press.
Step 5: Add the sides
Place the side piece with the opening side up on the bottom of the pouch matching the raw edges and clip. Repeat for the other side. Stitch using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Flip the sides to the top side of the pouch and clip. Stitch along the folded edge using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Hand stitch the sides of the side pieces to the pouch using invisible stitch. Turn the bag right sides out. Fill the pouch and zip it up. You have now finished your cube zipper pouch.
