How to Make a DIY Oven Mitt

How to make a diy oven mitt

I love to make items for the kitchen.  This DIY oven mitt is no different.  It is a fun and functional kitchen sewing project that anyone with basic swing skills can make.  This oven mitt makes a great gift as well. All you really need for this project is some fabric and some insul-bright.  Insul-bright consists of polyester fibers that are needled through a reflective metalized polyester film.  This process allows both heat and cold to be reflected back to it s source and not on the hands.  It works better than standard batting for this type of project.

For my oven mitt I used standard cotton for the outer shell and the lining with the Insul-bright in the center.  I purchased my fabrics at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores and the Insul-bright from Amazon.  You could head to Hobby Lobby, Fabric.com or onlinefabricstore.net to get the perfect fabrics for your project.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Step 2: Fuse the Insul-Bright to the Fabric Pieces

Using the can of fusible adhesive and following the manufacturers instructions spray the Insul-Bright and fuse it to each of the outer B and C pieces of fabric and to both of the A pieces of fabric.  Make sure the Insul-Bright is centered on the fabric pieces.

Step 3: Stitch the Oven Mitt B and C Pieces Together

Place the C piece right sides together with the B piece matching the bottom raw edges and clip.  Do this for both the outer and lining fabrics.  Measure up 4″ from the bottom and mark on each side of bot the outer and lining pieces.  Stitch from the marks you made to the bottom making sure to back stitch at each end to secure and using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Place the fabrics right sides together

Step 4: Add Oven Mitt Piece A

Place outer piece A right sides together with outer piece B and C with the rounded edges matching and clip.  Repeat for the lining pieces.  Stitch from the junction of the B and C pieces around the top curve using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Stitch around the bottom curve from the junction of the two pieces also using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Trim the seam allowances.  Turn the outer piece right sides out.

Step 5: Create the Hanger Piece

Take the rectangle piece of lining fabric and fold the raw edges into the center and press.  Fold in half to enclose the raw edges and press again.  Topstitch along both sides.

Step 6: Add the Hanger Piece

Fold the hanger in half.  Place it on one side of the outer piece and stitch it to the outer piece using a 1/8″ seam allowance to secure.

Add the hanger

Step 7: Combine the Outer and Lining Oven Mitt Pieces

Insert the outer piece into the lining piece so that they are right sides together.  Make sure that the raw edges match and the hanger is pushed in between the two pieces.  Stitch around the cuff raw edge leaving an opening for turning.  Turn right sides out. Topstitch around the cuff of the oven mitt to enclose the opening.  You have now completed your DIY Oven Mitt.

  1. I’m having a hard time understanding the “C” piece. Is it a separate piece to be sewn to the “B” piece? Why would “A” be shaped in an oval and not like “B”. I’ve been sewing for 40+ years and find the directions somewhat unclear. (Could be me, though)

    1. Yes, if you notice from the pattern at the bottom the B piece is shorter than the C piece so when you cut out the piece that looks like the mit you should have two pieces one that is shorter than the other. which are pieces B and C and an oval piece that is piece A. You stitch B and c together at the sides as described and then add the oval for the pad of the mit. I hope this makes sense. If not, let me know.
