How to Make a DIY Santa Hat

How to Make a DIY Santa Hat

Christmas is just around the corner and it is time to work on our Christmas sewing and crafting projects.  I decided to make a new Santa hat to wear as a hand gifts this Christmas day.  This tutorial will walk you through all of the steps necessary for how to make a DIY Santa hat using your own fabrics.  I chose a red napped fabric for my Santa hat but you could use fleece or felt for yours.  This pattern and tutorial will work for any of those fabrics. This is a simple sewing project that anyone with basic sewing skills can create following these instructions.  So I urge you to give this one a try.

I used my old Santa hat to create the pattern for this project so if you have an old one that you like the fit use that and create your own pattern.  Of course I have had this remnant sitting in my stash for years just waiting for a project like this.  I purchased the faux fur at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores where you can buy online by clicking the link and picking up in store but you could head to Hobby Lobby or Fabric.Com to get exactly the type of fabric and faux fur you want for your project.  I used my faux fur to make the pom pom on top but you could get yarn and create a more traditional style pom pom. Matching the pom pom with the faux fur was important to me so I created it out of the fur that I had left over.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Step 1:  Cut Your Fabrics

Place the pattern piece on the fold and cut one piece of the red fabric of your choice.  Keep in mind that if you use felt that it does not stretch so you may have to cut the pattern larger.  The napped fabric that I used and fleece stretch slightly so the pattern should work fine.  Measure and cut a Rectangle of fabric for the cuff of the hat that measures 4″ x 23.5″.  Cut two circle patterns from the faux fur for the pom pom.

Step 2:  Sew the pom pom

Using a 1/2″ seam allowance sew 3/4 of the way around your circle of faux fabric.  Stuff the circle with a little bit of fiberfill or scrap fabric and set it aside.

Step 3: Prepare the Cuff

Fold one of the long edges down by 1/2″ and stitch.  Pin the right side raw edge of the faux fur to the wrong side raw edge of the red fabric hat bottom.
