How to Make a Fabric Easter Basket
Easter is just around the corner. You could always go and buy an easter basket but why do that when you can follow this simple tutorial on how to make a fabric Easter basket. This is a super simple basket making project that is perfect for easter. Eliminate the handle end ears and use it for a storage basket. This is a really cute little basket that anyone with basic sewing skills can make in no time. Just choose some really cute fabric or try something plain and stitch a face on your Easter basket. I used remnants for my Easter basket. I had a cute home decorator weight polka dot fabric that was just perfect for this project and some pink cotton fabric for the lining. What you will Need: How to Make a Fabric Easter Basket

- 1/2yd outer and lining fabric
- 1/2 yd Pellon 808 interfacing
- Standard sewing supplies.
Step 1: Cut your Basket Fabrics
Determine the size of your Easter basket by choosing the circumference of the bottom of your basket. I used a bowl to draw out the circle for the bottom. This determined the side of the rest of my basket. Draw the circle on the outer fabric, the lining fabric and the interfacing. You will need one of each.
From there, draw a 1/4″ seam allowance inside the line you just drew. Measure the seam allowance line to determine the length of the body of your easter basket add the seam allowance to both ends. Here my seam allowance is 1/4″ so I added 1/2″ to my measurement. Decide on the height of your basket. I decided to make my basket 7 1/2″ high. You will cut 1 outer piece, 1 lining piece and 1 interfacing piece from these measurements. Cut a 20″ x 4″ piece of outer fabric and interfacing for the handle. Finally, using the pattern piece, cut two outer pieces, lining pieces and two interfacing pieces for the ears.
Step 2: Fuse the Interfacing
Following the manufacturer’s instructions, fuse the interfacing to all of the outer fabric pieces.
Step 3: Create the Outer Easter Basket
Stitch the short ends of the main basket piece right sides together using a 1/4′ seam allowance. Press the seam open. Find the center of the bottom outer piece by folding it in half and mark both sides. Fold in half the other way and mark the center pints again. Do the same thing for the main body piece. Pin the main outer piece to the bottom outer piece right sides together matching the center marks. You will need many pins to secure. Stitch using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Turn right sides out.
Step 4: Create the Lining Easter Basket
Create the lining basket exactly the same way but leave an opening in the short ends of the main basket fabric for turning.
Step 5: Create the Ears
Place the outer ear piece and the lining ear piece right sides together. Stitch all the way around using a 1/4″ seam allowance but leaving the bottom open for turning. Do this for both ear pieces.
Step 6: Add the Ears
Place the ears on the opposite side of the outer seam right sides together folding the ear partially to help it stay up when the basket is finished. Stitch the ears in place using a 1/8″ seam allowance to secure. The ears should be facing down at this point.
Step 7: Create your Strap
Fold the strap piece right sides together. Press. Open the fabric and press the long raw edges to the center. fold in half lengthwise to enclose the raw edges. Stitch on both sides of the strap.
Step 8: Add the Strap
Place the strap on either side of the bag adjacent to the ears on the center marks matching the raw edges. stitch the strap in place using a 1/8″ seam allowance to secure.
Step 9: Add the Lining
Place the outer bag into the lining bag so that they are right sides together and the ears and strap are sandwiched between the two layers. Stitch all the way around the top using a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Step 10: Turn the Basket
Reach into the bag through the opening in the lining and turn the entire bag right sides out. At this point the strap should be on the outside and the ears should be sticking up.
Step 11: Finish the Basket
Close the opening using ladder stitch and topstitch all the way around the top to secure the lining. Fill with Easter treats and you have finished your fabric Easter basket.
