How to Make a Garden Kneeler

How to Make a Garden Kneeler

It won’t be long before it is time for gardening. So I decided to create a garden kneeler to help me out this year.  I am so looking forward to spring this year.  After such a long and tumultuous winter it is time to look toward a new year.  One way to do that is to garden and create beautiful color and delicious vegetables to start the summer right.  If you are going to get down on your hands and knees in your garden this year you will definitely need a kneeler.  This is a super simple sewing project that will solve that problem for you. This garden kneeler is a beginner sewing project that anyone with basic sewing skills can make in just a few minutes.  The beauty is you have a variety of fabrics to choose from.

I chose a fun bird laminated fabric that is waterproof and good for outdoor use.  I purchased this fabric from Fabric.com.  They have a variety of laminated fabrics and oil cloths that you can choose from.  You could choose a standard cotton fabric and use fusible vinyl to create your own waterproof fabric for your garden kneeler.  I have used fusible vinyl in the past and really like it but choose to use the laminated cotton for this project instead.  Any of these options will work.  The laminated cotton and oil cloth can generally only be found online whereas the vinyl fuse and cotton fabric can be found at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What you will Need How to Make a Garden Kneeler

Step 1: Cut Your Fabrics

Cut two pieces of laminated or oil cloth fabric that measures 16″ x 21″.  You can use two different fabrics for a reversible kneeler if you like.

Cut your fabrics

Step 2: Add the Twill Tape

Find the center of each short side of one of the rectangles you just cut.  Place the twill tape 2 1/2″ on each side of the center mark and clip.  Repeat for the other end.  Stitch the twill tape to the rectangle.

Add the twill tape

Step 3: Place the Pieces Together

Place the two rectangles right sides together sandwiching the twill tape.  Clip in place.  Pins will leave a whole in the laminated cotton or oil cloth.  Stitch all the way around the rectangles using a teflon foot and a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Leave an opening and one end of the kneeler for turning and stuffing.

Place right sides together

Step 4: Turn the Garden Kneeler Right Sides Out

Clip the corners and turn the kneeler right sides out.

Step 5: Stuff the Garden Kneeler

Using the Polyester fiberfill stuff the garden kneeler until it is firm.  Close the opening using ladder stitch.
