How to Make a Halloween Door Hanger

It is time to start working on my Halloween decor for this year.  I was looking for something for the front door that wasn’t really traditional but still had that Halloween flavor.  I came across this idea at Sew Totally Smitten.  Her idea was a good one but I wanted to make it my own so I made some changes.  I wanted to make it more of a sewing project than a craft project so I used Kona cotton for my candy corn instead of paint.  I like Kona cotton because of the ease of sewing with it and the wide variety of colors that it comes in. It was perfect for this project.  Candy corn is such an iconic halloween staple that it makes the perfect door hanger.

You can find Kona cotton at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores, Fabric.com or onlinefabricstore.net.  There are other standard cotton fabrics that you can use for this project as well.  Just make sure the colors are orange yellow and white for the traditional candy corn.  This project contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What you will Need: How to Make a Halloween Door Hanger

What you will Need- Halloween Hanger

Step 1: Cut out your fabrics

Cut 2 pieces of orange, yellow, and white fabric that measures 4″ x 12″.  Cut an additional 2 pieces of orange, yellow and white piece that measures 3″ x 9″.  Finally, cut a third set of orange, yellow, and white fabric that measures 2 1/2″ x 5″.

Step 2: Stitch your Fabrics

Starting with one piece of the 4 ” x 12″ yellow fabric place it right sides up on your work surface.  Lay the orange piece right sides down on the yellow piece and pin.  Stitch the two pieces together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Place the white strip right sides down on the orange piece and pin.  Stitch the pieces together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Repeat for the other three pieces. Press the seams open.   Repeat this process with the smaller pieces of fabric.

Step 3: Cut the Fabrics

Using the pattern pieces cut out two large, two medium and two small candy corn shaped pieces.

Step 4: Stitch your Candy Corn Pieces

Place the two large pieces right sides together, the two medium pieces right sides together and  the two small pieces right sides together.  Using a 1/4″ seam allowance stitch the pieces together leaving and opening at the bottom for turning and stuffing. Turn the pieces right sides out.

Step 5: Stuff your Fabrics

Using the fiberfill stuff the corn in the amount that looks pleasing to your eye.  I didn’t stuff them too much but just enough for dimension.

Step 6: Add the 1/4″ Black Ribbon

Cut the black ribbon in three different lengths.  I used 38″, 36 and 34″.  Pin the 1/4″ black ribbon in a large loop inside the open edges of the candy corn.  Use the longest length of ribbon for the  large corn, the medium for the medium and the short to the small corn.  Fold under the seams with the ends of the ribbon inside and pin. Stitch the opening closed along with the ribbon using ladder stitch.  If you are unfamiliar with ladder stitch check out the video below.

Step 7: Add the Remaining Ribbon

Tie the three pieces of ribbon holding the corn pieces together.  Stitch the 2 1/2″ black and white checked ribbon to the  1/4″ black ribbon knot you just created.  On top of the black and white ribbon add the orange ribbon by either stitching or using hot glue.  Hang the door hanger on a hook on the door and enjoy.
