How to Make a Heart Pot Holder

How to Make a Heart Pot Holder

I love this pattern.  It is the perfect little potholder pattern for any kitchen.  It makes great gifts as well.  I have seen many versions of this pot holder but I thought to provide my version to you because they make such great gifts for the upcoming holiday season.  This tutorial will walk you step-by-step on how to make a heart pot holder of your very own. You can choose any woven fabric that you like but I chose a variety of red fabrics for my hearts. This is truly a beginner sewing project that anyone with basic sewing skills can make in about a half an hour.  I chose to do a very little bit of quilting on my potholder but you do not need to do any at all if you do not want.

The fabrics that I chose were, of course, remnants that I had on hand.  I used three different patterns of fabrics that I purchased at JOANN’s but you could head to Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to get the perfect fabrics for your heart post holders. There is one specialty product that you will need for this project.  You will need some Insul-Bright as the insulation for the pot holder. This is the product that keeps the heat away from your hands.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  As an Amazon associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What You will Need:  How to Make a Heart Pot Holder

What you will Need Potholder

Step 1:  Cut Your Fabrics

Cut out one heart fabric for the back of the pot holder and the inside of the pot holder on the fold.  Cut four of the half heart pieces from a different fabric.  Make sure that two pairs of the half hearts are mirror images of each other.  This should occur naturally if you are cutting on folded fabric.  But if you are cutting on a single layer of fabric turn the pattern upside down for the second set of half hearts.  Using a third fabric cut two rectangles that measure 2 1/4″ wide x 14″ long for the binding or use 14″ of pre-made bias binding. Cut one full heart of insul-bright and cotton batting.  Also, cut 2 half hearts of insul-bright and cotton batting.

Step 2:  Create the Back

Lay your Outer heart face down on your work surface.  Place the insul-bright on top of that piece of fabric and the batting on top of that.  Pin around the edges.  Turn over and mark quilting lines onto the right side of the fabric using a heat erasable pen like frixion or tailor’s chalk.  I chose to do two simple heart shapes rather than the standard lines that you see on pot holders.  Stitch over the lines that have drawn through all layers.  This is the quilting.

Step 3:  Create the Front

Layer the front half hearts.  Lay a half heart right side down then the insul-bright, the batting and the then another half heart.  Repeat for the other side.  Add quilting lines to the top pieces.  I simply added two half heart shapes to either side.

Step 4:  Add the Binding

First you will need to create the binding if you are not going to use pre-made bias binding.  Because there is not a lot of curve to this pot holder I did not cut my binding on the bias but just cut straight binding.  I folded the strip in half and pressed.  I then folded the raw edges in toward the center fold and pressed again.  Unfolded those edges and folded the raw edges to the second fold to create double fold bias tape.

I could have used a bias tape maker but there was just a small amount to make so I made it by hand. If you would like to make true bias binding you can follow my tutorial for making bias binding.  Add the binding to the inner edges of each of the half hearts.  If you are unfamiliar with how to sew on bias binding check out my bias binding tutorial.  For this project I simply sewed the raw edges together.  I then folded over the binding and stitched along edge.  Cut the binding so that it is even with the top raw edges.  Repeat for the other side.

Step 4:  Baste the front to the back

Lay the fabric side of the back face up on your work surface.  Place the bound heart hales on top of the back piece and baste the pieces together using a 1/8″ seam allowance.

Step 5:  Finish the pot holder

Place the second complete heart on the potholder right sides together and clip using wonder clips.  Using a 1/4″ seam allowance stitch all the way around the heart leaving a 2″ opening for turning.  Clip the peak of the heart without clipping into the stitching. Turn the heart right sides out poking the curves out with a poking tool like That Purple Thang.  Press.  Sew the opening closed using ladder stitch.  I like ladder stitch because it is invisible.  If you are unfamiliar with ladder stitch check out this video below.  You have now completed your heart potholder.
