I have resisted making this project for a long time. No particular reason other than I just didn’t feel the need until I nearly burned my hand on a non microwave safe bowl recently. Then I decided I needed at least one microwave bowl cozy. Okay, maybe a few. Once I decided to make this project I figured out how easy it is. The pattern for the standard microwave bowl cozy is super simple to make and falls in the beginner sewing category. It is straight-line sewing in a little different way. Regardless anyone with basic sewing skills can created these bowl cozies.
I used remnants that I had in my stash for this project that I purchased from JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores and Fabric.com. You could head to Hobby Lobby or onlinefabricstore.net to get exactly what you need if you don’t have anything in your stash for this project. But I recommend that you delve into your scraps and stash to get what you need for these. Piece some fabrics together and cut them to size if you need to. They don’t need to be beautiful just functional. Keep in mind these make great gifts too. What you need: How to Make a Microwave Bowl Cozy
- Two 10″ x 10″ pieces of fabric for each cozy
- Two 10″ x 10″ pieces of quilt batting for each cozy
- Standard sewing supplies
Step 1: Cut your Fabrics
Cut your fabrics so that they measure 10″ x 10″ for the fabrics and the batting
Step 2: Stitch the Fabric and Batting
Place one piece of fabric and one piece of batting together and draw an X from corner to corner using a Frixion heat erasable pen or other erasable pen. Repeat for the other piece of fabric and batting. Stitch along the lines you just drew.
Step 3: Stitch the Darts
Fold each piece in half, right sides together. Measure 1″ from the fold at the top and make a mark. Measure 2″ from the top down the fold and make a second mark. Draw a diagonal line. Stitch along the diagonal line. Fold in half the other way and repeat the process. Do the same thing for the other piece. Trim the seam allowance to about 1/8″.
Step 4: Stitch Pieces together
Place the two bowl pieces right sides together making sure that ll of the darts line up and clip or pin. Stitch all the way around the pieces using a 1/4″ seam allowance leaving an opening on one side for turning. Clip the corners making sure not to cut through the stitching.
Step 5: Turn Right Sides Out
Turn the cozy right sides out through the opening you left on one of the sides.
Step 6: Top Stitch around the Bowl Cozy
Once you have turned the cozy right sides out, make sure that all of the darts are aligned. Turn the edges of the opening to the inside of the cozy and clip. Topstitch all the way around the bowl cozy making sure to enclose the opening that used to turn the piece. Once you have completed the topstitching you have finished your microwave bowl cozy.
