How to Make a Mini Cell Phone Crossbody Bag

How to Make a mini cell phone crossbody bag

Here is another terrific hand bag project.  This is a mini cellphone crossbody bag that is a beginner handbag making project.  I saw this on Sewing Times on YouTube and decided to share it with you.  I made a few changes tot he pattern to make it a little easier to make but otherwise the main shape of the bag is the same.  There is nothing more fun than making handbags one is super simple.  It holds your cellphone and keys and small wallet and that is all you really need.  The beauty of this little bag is it takes no time at all to make.  The results are a fun and functional little cellphone handbag.

I used basic cotton for both the exterior and lining of my mini cell phone crossbody bag that I purchased at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores. You could, of course, head to Hobby Lobby, Fabric.com or onlinefabricstore.net to get exactly what you need for your bag. This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

I made an adorable little sun hat that matches this handbag.  I you are interested in creating that simple hat project check out my sun hat tutorial

What you will Need Cell Phone Bag

Step 1: Cut out your Fabrics

Cut two outer pieces that measure 7 1/2″ x 9 7/8″ and two that measure 7 1/2″ x 3 1/8″.  Cut two lining pieces that measure 7 1/2″ x 7 1/2″.  From the Fleece cut two pieces that measure  6 3/4″ x 9 1/8″.  Using the pattern piece cut the fleece pieces.

Step 2: Fuse the Fleece

Fuse the cut fleece piece to the main outer pieces following the manufacturer’s instructions and using as hot iron.  I use this cordless iron for all of my projects. Stitch Diagonal lines across the two outer pieces about 2″ apart.

Fuse the fleece

Step 3: Create the Lining

Add the smaller outer fabric to the lining piece right sides together and stitch using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Repeat.

Create the lining

Step 4: Cut the Outer and Lining Pieces

Place one outer and one lining piece right sides together.  Cut around the piece following the contours of the fusible fleece but leaving a 3/8″ seam allowance all the way around.  Repeat for the other two pieces.

Step 5: Add the Magnetic Snap

Add one half of the magnetic snap to the right side of the each lining piece by measuring down 1″ in the center.  I like to add a piece of craft fuse interfacing to support the magnetic snap so I would recommend that you do that.

Add the magnetic snap

Step 6: Create the Outer Bag and the Lining Bag

Place the outer bag and the lining bag right side together.  Stitch along the sides and the bottom of the outer bag using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Stitch along the sides and the bottom of the lining bag using a 3/8″ seam allowance but leave an opening on one side of the lining for turning the bag in a future step.

Places pieces right sides together

Step 7: Box the Corners

Box the corners by closing the hole in the corners.  To do this piece the bottom to the side matching the seams.  This will create a line.  Stitch along the line using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Turn the outer bag right sides out.

Step 8: Create the Tabs

Cut two 2″ pieces of webbing.  Wrap the webbing through the rectangle ring and clip.  Place the tab on the side seam off the outer bag with the rectangle ring facing down.  Stitch the tab to the outer bag.

Add the Tabs

Step 9: Stitch the Lining to the Outer Bag

Place the outer bag inside the lining bag so that they are right sides together.  Make sure that the tabs are in between the two bags.  Stitch all the way around the top of the two bags.  Turn the bags right sides out through the opening you left in the lining.  Close the opening using ladder stitch or your machine.  Stuff the lining into the outer bat.  Topstitch all the way around the top of the bag.

Step 10: Add the Triglide and Remaining Webbing

Thread one side of the webbing through one of the rectangle rings and fold under and stitch.  Feed the other end through the triglide then through the rectangle ring and back through the triglide.  Fold under and stitch making sure the webbing moves freely through the tridglide to change the length of the strap.  You have now finished your mini cell phone crossbody bag.

Add the strap
