How to Make a Note Book Pen Pouch

Want to learn how to make a notebook pen  pouch?  This one is a fun one. It is beginner sewing project That anyone with basic sewing skills can make even though it has a zipper.  I just love this little notebook pen pouch.  You can wrap the elastic around a book or notebook so it is always handy.  Place your pens in the front and a phone on the inside or just use it for pens and pencils.  Either way this is a functional little project to make and use.

I used basic cotton fabrics for this project that I purchased at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores.  I just love this little bee print.  It is so cute. What you will need:How to Make a Note B0ok Pen Pouch

Step 1: Cut the Fabrics

  • 2 outer and 2 lining pieces that measure 5″ x 8 3/4″
  • 1 outer piece that measures 5″ x 10 1/4″
  • 1 solid colored piece that measured 5″ x 12 3/4″
  • Interfacing
    • 2 pieces at 4 1/4″ x 8″
    • 1 piece at 4 1/4″ x 9 1/2″
    • 1 Piece at 4 1/4″ x 12″

Step 2: Fuse the Interfacing

Fuse the interfacing to the corresponding outer and solid colored pieces using a hot iron and following the manufacturer’s instructions. I use a Panasonic cordless iron that I purchased from Sewing Machines Plus.

Fuse the interfacing

Step 3: Create the Front Pockets

Take the larger outer piece and the solid colored piece and fold them in in half widthwise and press.  Topstitch along the fold.  Place one of the 4 1/4″ x 8″ outer pieces on your work space.  Lay the solid colored piece on top of the outer piece so that the bottom raw edges meet and stitch a line down the center securing the solid piece to the outer piece.  Place the folded outer piece on top of the solid colored piece and stitch along the sides and bottom starting at the top of the solid piece.

Fold the pockets in half
Place the solid fabric on the main outer fabric
Stitch down the center

Step 4: Add the Elastic

Take the 8 3/4″” piece of elastic  and the remaining outer fabric piece and place them on your work surface.  Lay the elastic onto the outer fabric piece in the center right sides together and stitch along the top and bottom.

Add the elastic

Step 5: Add the Zipper to the pen pouch

Place the zipper right sides together with the outer piece that has the pockets.  Fold up the ears of the zipper on both ends and clip.  Place the lining piece right sides down to create a zipper sandwich and stitch the zipper using a zipper sewing foot.  Turn right sides out and press. Topstitch along the zipper.  Place the other side of the zipper right sides together with the outer piece with the elastic. Fold the ears of the zipper down and clip.  Sandwich the zipper with the remaining lining piece and stitch the zipper together.  Turn right sides out and topstitch along the zipper.

Add the first half of the zipper
Add second half of zipper

Step 6: Stitch the Pen Pouch

Place the outer pieces right sides together and the lining pieces right sides together making sure that the zipper is open.  Stitch all the way around the pen pouch leaving an opening in the lining side for turning.  Turn the pouch right side out through the opening in the lining and the zipper.  Stitch the opening in the lining closed using your machine or ladder stitch. Push the lining into your zipper pouch and you have finished your Note Book Pen Pouch.
