How to Make a Padded Camera Lens Case

How to Make a Padded Camera Lens Case

I use a DSLR camera here at Sew Very Crafty and have several lenses that I use as well.  The lens cases that come with the lenses are not padded and I tend to be a little heavy handed with them.  In light of this, I decided to create these padded camera lens cases.  They are super simple to make and provide extra protection for my lenses. As are most of the projects on Sew Very Crafty, this project only requires basic sewing skills. All you have to do is use the pattern and follow the instructions to create these terrific padded lens cases.

I made a few different sizes of cases to fit a variety of lenses.  There are cases for my 55-300 zoom, 50mm and my 18-55mm.  These sizes could fit other sizes as well.  They are essentially small, medium, and large.

I obtained this terrific camera themed fabric at Fabric.com.  You could go to JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores or Hobby Lobby to get exactly what you need for your camera lens project.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What you will Need Camera Lens Case

Step 1: Cut your Fabrics

Determine what size case you would like to make for your lens.  Cut the associated pattern piece for the small, medium, or large case from both the lining, outer fabric and foam. Next, cut the following pieces:

For the large case cut a piece of foam that measures 12″ x 7″.  Cut outer and lining fabric pieces that measure 12″ x 9 1/2″

For the medium case cut a piece of foam that measures 12″ x 5″.  Cut outer and lining fabric pieces that measure 12″ x 7 1/2″

For the small case cut a piece of foam that measures 12″ x 3″. Cut outer and lining fabric pieces that measure 12″ x 5 1/2″

Step 2: Fuse your Foam

Fuse your foam to the outer fabric circle and the outer fabric.  You will fuse the foam to the outer fabric starting at the bottom.  The sides of the foam and fabric will be even.  You will notice that the foam does not reach the top of the outer fabric.  This is correct.  If you are unfamiliar with how to fuse the foam, simply follow the manufacturers instructions.  All you need is a hot iron to complete the job.

Step 3: Sew the sides

Using a 1/2″ seam allowance sew the short sides of the outer fabric and the lining fabric right sides together.  You will stop stitching the outer fabric 1″ from the top.  Leave a 1/2″ gap then finish the seam.  You will use this opening to insert the ribbon in a later stop. Leave a 2″ opening in the lining side for turning.

Step 4: Add the bottom circles

In both the outer and lining pieces place the circles right sides together with the main fabrics and stitch using a 1/2″ seam allowance.  I used wonder clips to clip my circles.  If you don’t have wonder clips you can use pins but I find the wonder clips to be a little easier to use for this process.  You can purchase wonder clips through my Amazon shop here.

Step 5: Add the lining

Place the outer case inside the lining case so that they are right sides together. Stitch around the top using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Turn the case right sides out.  Stitch the opening closed using ladder stitch.  If you are unfamiliar with ladder stitch check out this video.  Push the lining into the outer case and press.

Step 6: Finish the case

Stitch a line just above the foam all the way around the case using a matching thread.  Stitch another line just below the opening you left on the side of the outer fabric all the way around the case.  Place a safety pin at one end of your ribbon and feed it through the channel you just created so that it comes out the other end.  Place your lens inside the case and pull the ribbon tight to close.  You have now finished your padded camera lens case.
