What you will need: Padded Sleep Mask

  • Padded Sleep Mask Pattern
  • Fat quarter, Fat eighth or remnant for body of mask
  • Coordinating fabric if you want two colors
  • Fusible Fleece
  • 1/4″ elastic
  • Standard Sewing Supplies

Step 1: How to Make a Padded Sleep Mask

Print Pattern and cut 2 pieces of fabric either the same pattern or different patterns, and 2 pieces of fusible fleece.  Cut the Fleece about 1/4″ smaller than the main body fabric. Fuse the fleece to both pieces following the manufacturers instructions. If you are unfamiliar with how to fuse the fleece it is a simple process.  There is a glue side and plain side.  place the glue side on the wrong side of your fabrics and press the fabric using a hot iron until the glue melts and fuses with the fabric and the two pieces can be treated as one.

Step 2: How to Make a padded sleep mask

Measure the elastic to fit snugly to your head keeping in mind to leave room for the mask and cut.  In other words your elastic and mask should fit snugly around your head. Pin the elastic to the right side of one of your fabric pieces so that the ends of the elastic are even with the sides of the mask.

Step 3: How to Make a padded sleep mask

Place the 2 mask pieces right sides together with the elastic in the center and pin.  Stitch around the perimeter leaving an opening at the top for turning. When you reach the point where the nose is remember to stop with your needle down and pivot to go in the opposite direction.  This will create a nice point.  Clip the fabric at the point without clipping the stitching for a nice clean look.

Step 4: How to Make a padded sleep mask

Turn the mask inside out.  The elastic should be on the outside. Use a pointer to push out the seams. Press well.  Sew the opening shut using ladder stitch.  Then you can top stitch 1/8″ around the entire mask if you want to but it is not necessary.  You are now finished with a terrific padded sleep mask.
