How to Make a Quilted Zipper Pouch

How to make a quilted zipper pouch

I am gearing up for my quilted sewing machine cover so I’m doing another simple quilting project to get myself ready for the big day.  I decided to make this quilted zipper pouch because it uses the 2″ squared that I will need for my next sewing machine cover project.  This is a simple beginner sewing project. But, as most of you know I am not a proficient quilter.  You are learning along with me.  This little quilting project should send me in the right direction.  One thing I am learning is that cutting correctly is the key to quilting.  I took care with these small squares.

Not much fabric is needed for this little zipper pouch.  I used scraps of fabric that I had on hand. Quite frankly, I bought them at a shop in Pasadena years ago when I thought I wanted to learn how to quilt and they have been in my garage ever since.  So decided to use them for this project.  You, of course could head to your own stash, Joann’s, fabric.com or online fabricator.net to get what you need for this project.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Step 1: Cut Your Fabrics

Cut 50 2″ squares of fabric and use 48 for the bag.  Use 2 – 2″ squares for the zipper tabs.  Cut two 7 1/2″ x 10″ pieces for the lining.  Cut two pieces of quilt batting that measure 8″ x 13″.

Step 2: Piece the Squares Together

Stitch the squares together in rows.  Start by placing two squares right sides together and stitching them together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Add there third square in the same way then the fourth until you have 6 squares to complete the row.  Stitch 4 rows.  Place two rows right sides together and stitch using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Then add the remaining two rows in the same way.  Repeat for the other side.  You should now have two pieced sides of the bag.  Sew around each side using a 1/8″ seam allowance to stabilize.

Step 3: Quilt the Sides

Place each pieced side on a piece of quilt batting either using spray baste or pins.  Quilt the panels to the batting by stitching 1/4″ on each side of each seam.

Step 4: Trim the Excess Batting

Trim off the excess batting and square up the pieced panels if necessary.

Step 5: Add the Zipper Tabs

Shorten the zipper to 9 1/2″.  Move the zipper pull to the center and shorten the zipper from both ends.  Fold the zipper tabs in on two opposite sides by 1/4″ and press.  Fold in half and press.  Sandwich the zipper between the fold and stitch.  Trim off the excess so that the zipper tab is even with the zipper.  Do this for both ends of the zipper.

Step 6: Add the zipper

Find the center of one of the pieced panels and make a mark.  Find the center of the zipper and make a mark.  Place the pieced  panel right sides up on your work surface.  Place the zipper right sides down matching the center markings.  Lay one of the lining pieces onto of the zipper right sides down.  Clip or pin.  Stitch the zipper through all three layers using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Open the zipper and press.  Topstitch along the zipper to secure the lining and for a more professional look.  Repeat for the other side of the zipper.  Open the zipper 3/4″ .

Step 7: Complete the Quilted Zipper Pouch

Match the pieced panels together and the lining panels together and either clip or pin. Stitch all the way around the pouch but leave about a 4″ opening in the bottom for turning.  Turn the bag right sides out through the opening in the lining and the opening in the zipper.  Stitch the opening in the lining closed either using ladder stitch or your machine.  Stiff the lining into the bag and you are finished.  How simple was that?
