How to Make a Round Fabric Basket

I love to make fabric baskets.  I have several of them on the site but I particularly like this round fabric basket.  It can be made in any size you like.  In this tutorial I am making a large one for extra storage space.  This is a fairly easy sewing project but I would not characterize it as a beginner project.  It does require some more advanced sewing skills because it is round.  Nevertheless,  this is a fun little project to make that provides that little bit of extra storage that you need.  Choose some fun fabrics like I did or match your home’s decor.  Either way this project is fun and functional. 

I used some decorator weight fabric for my round fabric basket but you do not need to.  You can use standard quilting cotton and get a nice result.  The outer cherry fabric was a remnant that I purchased at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores while the accent and lining fabrics I purchased by the yard also at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores.  You could head to Hobby Lobby, Fabric.com or onlinefabricstore.net to get the perfect fabric for your project.  I like using what is in my stash.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  

What you will Need: How to Make a Round Fabric Basket

• 1/2 yd outer Fabric
• 1/2 yd lining fabric
• 1/4 yd accent fabric
• 1/2 yd fusible fleece or fusible foam
• Standard sewing supplies

Step 1: Cut your Fabrics

• 30 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ outer fabric and lining fabric
• 29 5/8″ x 7 1/8″ fleece or foam
• 10 1/4″ x 10 1/4″ square of outer and lining fabric
• 9 1/2″ diameter circle of fleece or foam
• 30 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ piece of accent fabric

Step 2: Stitch the Basket Fabrics Together

Stitch the outer fabric to the accent fabric right sides together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Stitch the lining fabric to the accent fabric on the other side also with right sides together.  You should have the outer fabric and the lining fabric stitched with the accent fabric separating the two. Press.  

Step 3: Fuse the Fleece or Foam

I used fusible fleece for my project because I used decorator weight fabric on the outside though the foam would have worked better.  I would definitely recommend using fusible foam if you are using quilting cotton.  Fuse the fleece or foam to the wrong side of the outer fabric following the manufacturer’s instructions. The fleece or foam should overlap the seam so that it is in the center of the accent fabric.  If you want you can draw a line down the center of the accent fabric to make sure that your foam or fleece is in the center. Press.  

Step 4: Stitch the sides

Fold the fabric in half so that the short ends meet.  Stitch along the short side leaving an opening in the lining side for turning.  

Step 5: Create the Bottom

Fuse the round piece of fleece or foam to the wrong side of the outer square of fabric.  Trim the fabric to match the circle but leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Cut the lining square to match.  Quilt the bottom of the outer piece by stitching several lines along the bottom about 1″ apart.  

Step 6: Add the Bottom to the Main Fabric 

In order to place the bottom circles on the main fabric fold them in half and mark the centers.  Fold in half the other way and mark the centers.  You will have four marks on the circled pieces.  Find the centers of the main fabric piece in the same way.  Clip along the raw edges of the main fabric piece on the outer fabric side and the lining side to make stitching the bottoms easier.  Pin the outer bottom to the outer side of the main fabric piece right sides together and stitch using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Repeat for the lining side.  

 

Step 7: Stitch the Basket Bottoms Together

Place the bottoms together with the rest of the fabric in the center.  Match the centers that you previously marked.  Stitch a few stitches at each mark to join the two bottom pieces together.  

Step 8: Turn the Round Basket Right Sides Out

Reach in and turn the basket right sides out through the opening you left in the lining.  Stitch the opening closed using ladder stitch.  If you are unfamiliar with ladder stitch check out the video below.  You have now finished your round fabric basket.
