How to make a Sewing or Craft Organizing Caddy

How to make a Sewing or Craft Organizing Caddy

I have so many sewing and crafting tools and so few ways to keep them at hand that I decided to create this little organizing caddy.  I wanted to make sure that the pattern could be used for any size container so I modified my garden bucket apron that I made earlier this year to meet my needs for this little caddy.  This project is perfect for tin cans, mugs or even bucket sized containers depending on how large you want your caddy to be. Believe it or not I had a round plastic toilet paper holder that I got for free years ago and thought it was the perfect shape for this project. This is a simple sewing project that requires a little bit of measuring but only needs basic sewing skills.

I could have used remnants for this project but I purchased this fabric at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores because I really wanted it to be special. I love the country look of these fabrics.  You could head over to JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores and get these same fabrics or others or you could head to Amazon Fabrics or Onlinefabricstore.net to get exactly what you need for this project. What you will Need Caddy

Step 1: Measure and cut your fabrics

To make your caddy fit your container you will need to measure, measure, and measure.  Start by creating the inside bottom of the container.  Simply set your container on your inside fabric and draw around the bottom. Cut two circles for the bottom.

Measure the inside of your container and add 1/2″ to the width and 1/2′ to the height and cut. Repeat for the outside of the container.  I used the same fabric for the inside of the container as I did for the outside.

Take the outside measurement and add half again the number so it should be 1 1/2 times the length.  You will be making the pockets from this piece.

Cut a piece of bias binding that measures the length of the bottom of the outer fabric of your caddy.

Step 2: Add the bottom to the inside fabric

Sew the short ends of the inside piece together to form a circle of fabric.  Keep the round circles together.  Pin the circles to the inner fabric and sew right sides together.  This will complete the inner part of the caddy.

Step 3: Add the pockets to the outer fabric

Take the pocket piece and fold it in half lengthwise and give it a good press.  The fold will be the top of the pockets. Find the center of the pocket piece and line it up with the center of the outer fabric and pin.  Pin the short edges together.  Find the center between the two sides and mark again until you have as many pockets as you want.  I ended up with 8 pockets.  Stitch where you have pinned.

You will pleat the remainder of the fabric. To do this simply fold the fabric on each side of the stitch line toward the stitching and pin.  Do this for each stitch line until there is no excess fabric. Clip using wonder clips.  You can use pins but the wonder clips are much easier to work with.  If you don’t have any you can get them in my Amazon shop.  Stitch along the bottom of the pleats to hold them in place.

Step 4: Add the binding

Sew your binding to the bottom of the outer pocket piece to cover the raw edges. You can create your own bias binding following my bias binding tutorial or you can use pre-made bias binding.  If you are unfamiliar with how to sew on bias binding you can take a look at my how to sew bias binding tutorial. In this instance I made my own straight grain binding since their are no curves on this project.  I used the large bias binding maker to create my binding.    Sew the short ends of the outer fabric right sides together to create a circle of fabric.

Step 5:  Sew the outer fabric to the inner Fabric

Place the outer fabric inside the inner fabric right sides together and sew along the top raw edges using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Pull the outer fabric right sides out.  Place the inner fabric into the container and pull the outer fabric over the rim so that it covers the outside of the container. The seam holding the inner and outer fabric together should be on the rim of the container and the binding should skirt the bottom.  You have now finished your sewing or craft organizing caddy.  Just fill it with necessities and place it in your space.
