How to Make A Simple Baby Romper

I have been wanting to make a baby project for a while now and came across this adorable little baby romper that I wanted to share with you.  I got the pattern from Sleeping is for Sissies.  It is a simple yet adorable little romper that anyone with intermediate sewing skills can make.   This romper is a 0-6 months size and can be made using a large remnant.  You know me, I am all for using remnants because they are half price.  I had a 1 yd remnant on hand that was perfect for this little romper project.

What you will Need: How to Make a Simple Baby Romper

• Pattern you can get Here
• 1 yd. outer fabric
• 1/4 yd facing fabric
• 2 10″ lengths of 1/4″ elastic
• 4 Kam snaps
• 2 buttons

Step 1: Print the Pattern

Print the Pattern and tape it together with the edges of the pages abutting each other with no overlap.  Each page is numbered so you will want to lay out the pattern pieces in two rows of 3 pieces to make one big page with two pattern pieces.  Tape the pages together and cut out the large pieces.  

Step 2: Cut out the pattern

From the main fabric cut two front pieces and two back pieces that mirror each other.  This should happen naturally if you are cutting on folded fabric.  Once you have cut the large pattern pieces remove the pattern and cut along the facing lines.  These pieces will be your facing pieces.  Cut two front and back facing pieces from your facing fabric.  

Step 3: Stitch the Front and Back Pieces

All seams on this project are 3/8″. Place the two front pieces right sides together and stitch down the center seam.  Finish your seam to avoid fraying either by serging, pinking or zig-zagging. Repeat this process for the back pieces and the facing pieces.  Keep in mind that you will need to finish the bottom of your facing pieces either by hemming them or some other means. I serged mine. If you are going to add any kind of embellishment to the front of your romper now is the time to do it.  I added a little iron on whale applique to my romper.  

Step 4: Stitch the facing to the outer Piece

Stitch the front facing to the outer fabric right sides together.  You will only stitch along the top and the arm holes.  Leave the sides and bottom open.  Repeat for the back piece.  Clip the corners and notch the curves.  Trim the seam allowances.  

Step 5: Turn the Facing

Turn the facing so that it is on the wrong side of the outer fabric. Use a poking tool like That Purple Thang to poke out all of the corners and the rounded edges.  Press making sure that you have crisp curves and edges.  

Step 6: stitch the romper pieces

Place the front and back pieces right sides together.  Sew the front to the back at the sides.  Keep in mind that the facings may not be exactly even.  Finish the seams.

Step 7: Add the elastic

On the leg openings excluding the crotch either serge or fold under 1/4″ and stitch.  Fold again 1/2″  and stitch again to create the opening for the elastic.  Feed the elastic trough the openings that you created in the legs using a safety pin attached to each end of the elastic.  Once the elastic is fed through, pin the elastic with just the safety pin peaking trough at either end.  Stitch 1″ from the end across to close the casing and catch the elastic.  I would stitch a few times to make sure that the elastic is secure,  Pull the pin and little bit if elastic out and cut it off.   

Step 8: Finish the crotch

Turn the front crotch piece under by 1/2″ and press.  Turn again 1/2″ and press again.  Stitch.  Repeat for the back crotch piece.  Attach the snaps evenly along the snap placket you just created.  Place one row along the front wrong side packet and one row along the back right side placket so the plackets overlap.  If you are unfamiliar with how to attach snaps check out this video.  

Step 9: Add Button and Button Hole

Following your machine’s instructions add a button hole to each of the front straps and a button to each of the back straps.  You have now finished your simple baby romper.
