How to Make a Simple Fleece Hat

Winter is just about here.  The weather is getting colder and keeping warm is a priority.  What better way to do it than this super simple fleece hat.  Absolutely anyone can make this hat in just minutes.  Fleece is a simple fabric to work with and comes in numerous colors and patterns to choose from.  It is a nice thick and warm fabric that does not fray and works perfect for this simple project. 

I happened to have this nice red fleece in my stash so I used that to make my hat from but you can chose anything.  I purchased my fleece at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores where you can order online and pick up in store but you can go to Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to get your fleece for this project.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  

What you Need:  How to Make a Simple Fleece Hat

• 1/2 yd. Fleece
• Standard Sewing Supplies

Step 1: Cut your Fabric

Measure the circumference of your head and subtract 1″ to determine fabric width. Cut a rectangle of fleece that is 22″  in length x the previous measurement.  

Step 2: Sew the Side Seam

Fold the fabric width in half with right sides together. Sew a seam using a 5/8″ seam allowance that measures 16″ long.

Step 3: Cut the fringe

On the unsewn end, cut a 6″ slit along the fold. Cut another 6″ slit halfway between the existing slits. Continue to cut 6″ slits in the same way so that you have 16 evenly spaced strips, like fringe at one end of the hat.

Step 4: Sew the HatBand

Fold the sewn end 4″ to the inside of the hat in order to make the hatband. Sew ½” from the turned under raw edge to secure the band to the hat.

Step 5: Form the Hat

Cut a 1″ x 16″ strip of fleece. Tie the strip around the hat where the  “fringe” begins. This will form the hat shape. Trim the tie ends to length of fringe so that it blends in with the rest of the fringe.

Step 6: Create the cuff

Turn the hat band back to the front side of the hat like a cuff. You have now finished your simple fleece hat.
