How to Make a Strawberry Drawstring Bag

I love little bags as many of you know who follow Sew Very Crafty..  This little strawberry drawstring bag is so cute I had to share it with you.  It is a simple patchwork project.  Although it seems complicated anyone with basic sewing skills can create it.. It is fun and functional and was inspired by one I saw at Sewing Times on YouTube. This little strawberry drawstring bag makes a perfect gift or the perfect container for a gift.  I really enjoyed putting this project together. I know you will too. 

To create this adorable project, I used remnants and fat quarters from my stash.  I purchased these over time from different places.  Many came from JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores.  You of course could head to Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to get exactly what you need for this project.  I also used some 1.5 mm braided cording but you could use some ribbon instead for the drawstrings.  This post contains affiliate links that If you click on them and make a purchase I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What you will Need: How to Make a Strawberry Drawstring Bag

• 6 Fat quarters, remnants or scraps for the outer berry
• 1/4 yd of lining fabric
• 1/4 yd green fabric
• 43 1/2″ 1.5 mm cording for drawstring
• 1/4 yd fusible fleece 

Step 1: Cut your Fabrics

•  Cut 6 — 3 1/8″ x 7 1/2″  pieces of the outer and lining fabric
• Using the pattern piece cut  6 green and 6 lining pieces for the leaves
• Cut 2 — 3 1/8″ x 3 1/8″ squares of green for drawstring tabs
• You should cut 2 — 7 1/2″ x 2″ lining fabric for drawstring casing
• Using the pattern piece, cut the 6 pieces of fusible fleece

Step 2: Fuse the Fleece

Fuse the fleece to the outer fabric pieces. Lay each outer piece on its corresponding lining piece and clip.  Cut the points from the outer pieces leaving a 3/8″ seam allowance.   

Step 3: Stitch the outer pieces

Take two of the outer pieces and place them right sides together and pin the right sides.  Stitch the right side using a 3/8″ seam allowance finishing at the bottom point where the fleece ends. Add a third piece to the first two in exactly the same way.  Take the other set of three pieces and repeat the process.  You will have two sets of three pieces.    

Step 4: Create the leaves

With right sides together stitch the outer leaves and the lining leaves together leaving the tops open. Turn the leaves right sides out and press.  Top stitch around the sides and bottom of the leaves. 

Step 5: Create the Drawstring Casing

Take the 7 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles and turn under the sort ends by 3/8″ and press.  Fold them lengthwise wrong sides together and press again.  

Step 6: Add the Drawstring Casing and leaves

Find the center of one of the three outer pieces by folding in in half lengthwise and mark.  Find the center of one of the casing pieces and mark.  Starting at the center, add the first leaf and pin.  Place a leaf on either side and pin.  Place the casing on top pf the leaves and pin.  Repeat for the other set of three outer pieces and leaves. Stitch along the top using a 3/8″ seam allowance.   

Step 7: stitch the outer pieces together

Pin the leaves out of the way.  Place the outer pieces right sides together and pin.  Stitch the sides together using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Clip off the excess fabric at the points.  Turn right sides out.

Step 8: Create the lining

Stitch the lining pieces in the same way that you stitched the outer pieces. When you come to join the two three pieces together make sure that you leave an opening on one side for turning. Stitch using a 3/8″ seam allowance. 

Step 9: Add the lining to the Outer bag

Place the outer bag into the lining bag so that the bags are right sides together.  Match all of the seams and pin.  Stitch all the way around the top of the bag.  Turn the bag right sides out through the opening you left in the lining.  Stitch the opening closed using ladder stitch.  Push the lining into the bag.  Pull up the leaves and topstitch all the way around the top of the bag.  Press. 

Step 10: Add the drawstring

Cut the drawstring in half.  Thread one half of the drawstring through one side of the casing and out the other one.  Thread the other half of the drawstring in the opposite direction.  

Step 11: Create the Drawstring Tabs

Take the 3 1/8″ x 3 1/8″ squares and fold the in half right sides together and stitch using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Turn the tubes half way right sides out.  Insert the ends of the drawstrings into the small tubes and clip. Scrunch up the bottom and stitch across the tube and the drawstring. Turn the Tube so that the raw edges are encased and you have finished your strawberry drawstring bag.
