How to Make a Super Simple Bucket Bag

How to Make a Super Simple Bucket Bag

Bucket bags are always popular so I thought I would make one that is really easy and that you only need remnants for.  As anyone knows who reads this blog, I love to use remnants. I have a closet full of them that I am working through slow but sure.  You can get remnants at your local fabric store and they are usually half price.  Remnants are the amount of fabric that is a yard or less that is left on the bolt when all the fabric has been purchased.  So you can get up to a yard of fabric on any remnant purchase.

Though I like to use remnants if you don’t have any head over to Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com and get exactly what you need for this project.  Purchasing your fabric online will save you a lot of headaches at the fabric store and your fabric will arrive in a few days.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What you will Need:

  • Pattern Piece
  • 5/8 yd Exterior fabric, lining fabric, and fusible fleece
  • 1 yd contrast fabric
  • 8 1″ grommets
  • 1 yd 3/4″ braid or webbing
  • 1 1/2″ Craft Button
  • Bead and Button embellishments

What you will Need Bucket Bag

Step 1: How to Make a Super Simple Bucket Bag

Cut your fabrics as follows

  • Cut your main fabric, lining fabric and fusible fleece 16 1/2″ x 15  7/8″ on the fold.  Make sure that the 15 7/8″ side is on the fold
  • Cut  2  of your Contrast fabric 4 1/8″ x 31 7/8″
  • Using your contrast fabric cut out the pattern piece.

Step 2: How to Make a Super Simple Bucket Bag

Fuse the fleece to the main fabric and the bottom following the manufacturers directions.  If you are unfamiliar with fusible fleece there is a glue side and a fleece side.  Place the glue side to the wrong side of the main fabric and press with a hot iron and the glue will fuse the fleece to the fabric so that they act as a single piece of fabric. As you can see from the photo I use  Panasonic cordless iron.  I just love it.  If you are interested in purchasing this item head over to my affiliate Sewing Machines Plus and you can purchase it like I did for as low price and with free shipping.

Press under one long edge of both contrast bands by 1/2″.  Place one band at the top of the bag and one at the bottom of the bag matching the raw edges.  Top stitch along the folded edge.

With right sides together sew the 16 1/2″ sides together making sure to match the bands.  You will now have a tube of fabric.

With right sides together add the bottom to the main fabric. Center the long side of the bottom with the seam in the body of the bag.  Turn the bag right sides out.

Step 6: How to Make a Super Simple Bucket Bag

Sew the lining Piece the same way the you did for the main piece without the contrast banding.  This time leave an opening in the side seam for turning the bag.

Step 7: How to Make a Super Simple Bucket Bag

Place the outer bag inside the lining bag so that they are right sides together.  I clipped the layers together rather than pinned them because I used faux leather for my contrasting bands and the layers were getting a little thick.  If you would like to purchase some of these wonder clips head over to Amazon and purchase them like I did.  Stitch along the top using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 8: How to Make a Super Simple Bucket Bag

Pull the outer bag through the opening you left int he lining.  Stitch the opening closed and push the lining inside the outer bag.  Top stitch around the top of the of the bag for a more professional finish.

Step 9: How to Make a Super Simple Bucket Bag

Add the grommets to the bag through all layers following manufacturers instructions.  I am using plastic snap in curtain grommets for this project as they are the easiest to install.

Insert the 3/4″ braid through the grommets to act as the shoulder strap. Lap the ends and stitch to the bag.  Add a 1 1/” Craft button to cover the stitching.

Step 11: How to Make a Super Simple Bucket Bag

Add whatever embellishments you like.  I added some beads and cord to my bag.  Once you have finished the embellishments you have finished the bag. Just so easy.
