How to Make a Triangle Coin Purse

How to Make a Triangle Coin Purse

I am always looking for ways to use my remnants and scraps and I just love these little triangle coin purses so I thought I would do this tutorial on how to make one in about 30 minutes or so.  This tutorial on how to make a triangle coin purse was modified from a pattern by Spoonful of Sugar.  It is super simple to make and requires only basic sewing skills to complete.  This is truly a scrap worthy project.  Just a small amount of fabric, a metal zipper and a piece of ribbon will result in this terrific little coin purse.Lets get started.

What you will Need:

  • 8 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ piece of outer fabric and lining fabric
  • 4″ metal zipper
  • Pellon 808 or quilt batting (Optional)
  • Small piece of ribbon
  • Standard sewing supplies

Step 1: How to Make a Triangle Coin Purse

Cut your fabrics to 8 1/2″ x 4 1/2″.  I used decorator weight fabric so I did not need to use interfacing.  If you are using a fabric that is less sturdy you will want to add either some quilt batting or some Pellon 808 to support it.

Step 2: How to Make a Triangle Coin Purse

I did not have a 4″ metal zipper but I did have a 22″ metal zipper so I shortened it to be the length that I wanted.  Shortening a metal zipper is not the same as shortening a nylon zipper. You can simply cut a nylon zipper but you cannot cut through a metal zipper so if you do not have a 4″ metal zipper you should shorten yours by doing the following:

  • Measure and mark 4″ from the bottom of the zipper and make a mark using a disappearing or heat sensitive pen.

Mark your Zipper
  • Using pliers pry off the top stops of the zipper and set them aside.

  • Unzip the zipper to a few rungs above the place that you marked and start pulling out the metal teeth using pliers.  They slide off the zipper fabric quite easily with a good pull.

Remove the teeth
  • Cut through the fabric leaving some fabric at the top.
  • Replace the top stops crimping them closed with pliers. You have now shortened your metal zipper.

Step 3: How to Make a Triangle Coin Purse

Place the short side of the outer fabric face down on the zipper and the lining fabric face up underneath the zipper so that you have a zipper sandwich with the fabrics right sides together.  Using a zipper foot, sew the zipper to the fabric.  You will have one side of the zipper sewn.

Add one half of the zipper

Step 4: How to Make a Triangle Coin Purse

Take the other side of the fabrics and place them in the same way that you placed the first side.  You will have a second zipper sandwich.  Sew it in the same way.  You will have a tube of fabric separated by the zipper.

Step 5: How to Make a Triangle Coin Purse

Turn the piece wrong side out and sew a 1/4″ seam allowance at the bottom of the purse.  Zig zag along the edge to prevent fraying.
