How to Make a Two Zipper Pouch

How to make a two zipper pouch

I love zipper pouches. I make them all the time to put all kinds of things in.  This time I thought I would add an additional zipper pocket to make this a two zipper pouch.  This is a super simple sewing project even with the zippers.  Not only is it a simple project it doesn’t take much time to complete. Add some embellishments or keep it plain. Either way this is a fun and functional project.

I used a variety of fabrics for this project, all cotton.  I prefer to work with cotton when I can as it is the easiest fabric to sew in my opinion. In this case I decided to piece some scraps together for part of my two zipper pouch and add a little bit of lace as an accent. All of these fabrics came from my extensive remnant stash that I purchased over the years from Joann’s.  If you don’t have a stash like mine you can head to JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores, Hobby Lobby, Fabric.com, or Onlinefabricstore.net for exactly the fabrics you need for your two zipper pouch. What you will Need Two Zipper Pouch

Step 1: Cut your Fabrics

Cut your fabrics as follows:

Outer Fabric

  • 2 pieces that measure 8 3/4″ x 6 1/2″

Lining Fabric

  • 2 pieces that measure 8 3/4″ x 6 1/2″
  • 2 pieces that measure 8 3/4″ x 4 1/2″

Accent Fabric

  • 1 piece that measure 2″ x 12″ for the strap

Fusible Fleece

  • 2 pieces that measure 8″ x 5 3/4″

Pellon SF 101

  • 2 pieces that measure 8″ x 3 3/4″

Scraps

  • 8 scrap pieces that measure 2 3/4″ x 4 1/2″ — there should be two sets of four

Step 2: Fuse the fleece

Using the pattern piece round the bottom of all four pieces of fleece.  Fuse the large piece of fleece to the outer fabric pieces following the manufacturers instructions.  Place the corresponding lining pieces beneath the outer pieces.  Trim the corners so that they follow the 3/8″ seam allowance and shape of the fleece.

Step 3: Piece the Scraps

Take the two pairs of four scrap pieces and begin piecing them together.  Place them side by side and stitch them together one at a time using a 3/8″ seam allowance until you have two sets of four as shown.  Fuse the small pieces of SF101 to the wrong side of the pieced pieces.  Stack with the corresponding lining pieces.  Trim the corners following the seam allowance and the shape of the SF101.

Step 4: Stitch the outer pockets

Place one set of pieced pieces right sides together with its corresponding lining piece and stitch along the top using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Fold the piece right sides out and press.  Top stitch along the top.  Attach the pocket to one of the outer fabric pieces by stitching along the sides and bottom using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Stitch a line down the center of the pieced pieces to divide the pocket in half.

Step 5: add the 6″ zipper

Take the other pieced piece and corresponding lining piece and place it on your work surface.  Place the lace along the top of the pieced piece and stitch.  Take the 6″ zipper and fold the ends to the wrong side. Hand stitch them in place unless you are shortening a zipper like I did then you can skip this step but stitch stops at each end.  Place the small lining piece right sides up.  Center the zipper right sides up on the lining piece.  Lay the pieced piece right sides down on the zipper.  Stitch through all layers.  Turn the pieces right sides out and top stitch along the lace.

Add the zipper

Take the outer piece and measure down from the top 2″ and draw a line using an erasable pen.  Place the center of the zipper teeth along the line you just drew upside down.  Stitch along the zipper teeth.  Fold the piece right down  and stitch along the top from the ends of the zipper down the side and around the bottom to the other end of the zipper.

Step 6: create the strap

Fold the long edges to the center and press.  Fold in half again and press.  Top stitch along both sides of the strap.

Step 7: add the strap

Fold the strap in half.  Place it on the top part of the outer zipper piece about 1/2″ down from the top with raw edges together.  Stitch to the outer pieces.

Step 8: Add the 8″ zipper

Place a lining piece and place it right sides up on your work surface.  Take the 8″ zipper and turn up the ends to the wrong sides and stitch in place.  Place the 8″ zipper right sides up on the lining piece and centered.  Lay the outer pocket piece right sides down on the zipper and stitch through all layers.  Repeat for the other side of the zipper with the remaining lining piece and zipper pocket piece.  Turn right sides out and press.  Top stitch along both sides of the zipper. Open the zipper at least half way.

Step 9: Finish the two zipper pouch

Match the outer pieces and the lining pieces right sides together making sure the strap is inside the pouch.  Starting at the bottom of the lining. Leave an opening.  Stitch all the way around the piece until you reach the lining again.  Remember to make sure that there is an opening in the lining for turning. Turn the bag right sides out through the opening in the lining and the open zipper.  Stitch the opening closed using ladder stitch or your machine.  You have now finished your two zipper pouch.
