How to Make an Autumn Pumpkin Garland

How to make an autumn pumpkin garland

Autumn is just around the corner so I have started on my Autumn decorating projects.  I thought this year I would demonstrate how to make an autumn pumpkin garland.  This is a super simple sewing and crafting project that anyone can make.  It really comes out well with just a little bit if effort.  Hang it in front of a window or fireplace or along a staircase. This garland is the perfect way to decorate your home for this autumn season.

For me, this project was all about the fabrics.  I chose four terrific autumn themed fabrics that I purchased at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores.  I used basic quilting cotton for the pumpkins and backed them with felt to give them structure.  Of course you can order at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores and pick up in the store or have it delivered to your home.  You could also order from Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to get some terrific autumn themed fabrics for your pumpkin garland.  To hang the Garland I used eyelets and twine.  This step by step tutorial will show you exactly how I did it and how you can do it too.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What you will Need: How to make an autumn pumpkin garland

Step 1: Cut out the pattern

Print out and cut out the pumpkin pattern.

Step 2: Cut out the pumpkins

Using the four different fabrics cut out as many pumpkin shapes as you would like.  I strung my pumpkin garland from my fireplace mantle so I cut out 15 pumpkins.  As I cut out the pumpkins I cut out the felt backing as well.  That way I was assured that each pumpkin would line up with its backing.

Step 3: Sew the Fabric to the Backing

Using either a machine or by hand sew the fabric to the backing.  I did this by machine sewing around the edge of the pumpkin.

Step 4: Add the eyelets

Once you have sewn all of your pumpkins add two eyelets on either side of the stem to each of your pumpkins.  In order to add the eyelets punch holes on the upper center of each side of the stem. Push the eyelet through.  Using the eyelet pliers press the eyelet so that the back closes and the eyelet is fixed to the pumpkin.  If you are unfamiliar with how to add an eyelet take a look at this video.

Step 5: Thread the Twine

Once all of the eyelets have been added, thread the twine through the eyelets joining all of your pumpkins.  Spread out your pumpkins to the length that you want and you are finished with your autumn pumpkin garland.
