How to Make an Easy DIY Crafting Apron

How to Make an Easy DIY Crafting Apron

I have been doing a lot of crafting lately as you have seen and am forever misplacing my tools as I work away at my various projects so I decided to put together an easy DIY crafting apron to put my tools into as I am crafting away.  It really doesn’t get any easier than this one.  This crafting apron only requires a few fat quarters and some strapping and a little bit of time.

What you will Need

  • 2 fat quarters or remnants
  • 60″ –  78″ of cotton webbing
  • Standard Sewing Supplies.

Step 1: Easy DIY Crafting Apron

Cut two pieces of one fat quarter or remnant 7 1/2″ x 18″ and another 5 1/4″ x 18″ to create the first two pockets. Cut your second fat quarter or remnant 9″ x 18″.  You can make the apron wider depending on your size.  18″ is an average size.  But the tutorial is the same regardless of how wide you make your apron.

Step 2: Easy DIY Crafting Apron

Fold one long end of each of the first fat quarters 3/8″ and stitch.  This will act as the top of each of the pocket pieces.  Place the shorter of the first fat quarters on top of the taller of the first fat quarters so the bottoms are in alignment.  Mark the location of the lines that will designate your pockets.  I measured in 3″ from each side and sewed a line straight down each side and pinned a line down the center to be sewn later.

Step 3: Easy DIY Crafting Apron

Take the combination of the first two fat quarters that you just created and place it on top of one of the 9″ x 18″ pieces.  Then place the second 9″ x 18″ piece on top of the other layers right sides together.  You should have a sandwich of your 9″ x 18″ pieces with the pocket pieces in between.

Sew around all of the layers leaving an opening at the top for turning.  Clip the corners without cutting into the stitching to make nice neat points. Turn the piece right sides out through the opening that you left. Use a pointing tool to push out the corners.

Step 4: Easy DIY Crafting Apron

Once the entire piece has been turned and the corners pushed out using a chopstick or other tool press completely. Sew the opening using ladder stitch.

Step 5: Easy DIY Crafting Apron

Add your webbing by placing one edge over the top edge of the apron, overlapping by 1/2″. Sew along the bottom edge of the webbing so that you have created a waistband for your apron.

Step 6: Easy DIY Crafting Apron

Sew down the center pocket area through all layers and you have finished your Easy DIY Crafting Apron.
