How to make an easy fabric door organizer

How to make an easy fabric door organizer.  I love fabric and I love organizational projects. Especially projects that can be made with rectangles and squares so this one fits the bill.  I am always looking for storage and organizational ideas that I can make out of fabric from my stash so I decided to create this terrific easy fabric door organizer.  This organizer can be used in a bedroom, bathroom, closet or child’s room to store all of those little things that don’t have a home.

This easy fabric door organizer hangs on the back of any door using a hanger and a hook.  I used some decorator weight fabric that I had in my stash for this project so I would not have to interface it but you could head over to Fabric.com or Hobby Lobby to get the perfect fabric for your project.  I recommend heavier weight fabrics like decorator weight or damask for this project.  These fabrics are more durable than quilting weight fabrics that would have to be interfaced if they were to work at all.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What you will Need:

  • 1 1/3 yd heavy weight fabric like decorator weight
  • 20″ x 3/4″ elastic
  • 1 1/3 yd Jumbo Ric Rac
  • 1 straight padded hanger
  • Erasable Pen
  • Standard Sewing Supplies

Step 1: How to Make an Easy Fabric Door Organizer

Cut the following pieces:

  • 18 1/2″ x 18″ rectangle x 2
  • 10″ x 22 3/4″ rectangle x 2

Step 2: How to Make an Easy Fabric Door Organizer

Measure 4″ down from the top of one of the 18 1/2″ x 18″ pieces and pin the elastic without stretching it.  Tack the elastic at the ends. Sew vertically along the elastic to create sections.

Step 3: How to Make an Easy Fabric Door Organizer

Take both of the 10″ x 22 3/4″ pieces and fold them in half lengthwise wrong sides together and press.  Sew the Ric Rac along the folded edges. Take your time with this.  The Ric Rac adds a nice decorative element but it takes a bit of time to sew it on if you have never done it before.  You want to sew the Ric Rac so that you are sewing down the middle and not hitting any of the background fabric. There is a sweet spot right along the middle that will allow you to do this. But again., take your time. Use coordinating thread so that it blends into the trim.

Step 4: How to Make an Easy Fabric Door Organizer

Divide the 10″ x 22 3/4′ pieces into thirds and draw a vertical line at the 1/3rd marks.  Then measure 3/4″ on each side of the marks and mark those lines.

Step 6: How to Make an Easy Fabric Door Organizer

Add one of the pleated pieces to the bottom of the piece with the elastic and pin.  This will make the lower set of pockets.  Sew the edges and the centers of the pleats to fix the pocket to the backing with the elastic.

Step 7: How to Make an Easy Fabric Door Organizer

Measure down 11″ from the top of the elastic piece and draw a line with your erasable pen.  Pin the other pleated piece so that the raw edge meets the line and the pieces are right sides together.  The pocket will appear upside down at this point.  Sew in place along the long edge using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Insert the hanger into the bottom of the organizer and the hook through the top.  Hand stitch the openings using ladder stitch. If you are unfamiliar with Ladder stitch this tutorial is a great example of how to hand sew your opening closed so that it is invisible.
