How to Make an Easy Manicure Kit

Make an easy manicure kit

I finally got around to making this easy manicure kit.  My manicure supplies have been piled up in a bag for so long and I always have to pull everything out to find anything so I decided to create this easy to sew manicure kit that will keep all of my manicure supplies in order and easily accessible.  I needed a kit where I could house my clippers, emery board, polishes and other items and this one fit the bill.  This project is simple to construct and only requires basic sewing skills to complete.

I, of course, used remnants, but you could go to Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to get the fabrics that you need for this project.  You only need a small amount of fabrics. You could even use fat quarters if you like.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What you will Need:

  • Pattern
  • Remnant or 1/4 yd of exterior and two coordinating fabrics
  • 1/4 yd or remnant of fusible fleece
  • 25″ of ribbon
  • 9″ 1/2″ elastic
  • Standard sewing supplies

Step 1: How to Make an Easy Manicure Kit

Cut out the Pattern pieces as directed on the pieces.  Cut one of the coordinating pieces 13″ x 3 1/2″ lengthwise on the fold. Round the bottom corners to match the corners of the outer fabric.  This will be the inner top piece.

Step 2: How to Make an Easy Manicure Kit

Fold the front bottom piece lengthwise wrong sides together and press.  Sew a 5/8″ seam  line along the fold of the inner bottom piece.  This will be the casing for your elastic.  Insert the elastic using a safety pin.  Tack the ends of the elastic making sure that the top fold of the piece measures 9″ wide.

Step 3: How to Make an Easy Manicure Kit

Fold the inner top piece lengthwise wrong sides together and press.  Place the inner bottom piece on top of the inner top piece.  You will have to pleat the bottom to get the piece to fit. Draw vertical lines along the two pieces using an erasable pen.  I placed my lines 2 1/8″ apart to accommodate standard sized nail polish bottles.  Sew down the vertical lines to create the pockets. You will have two sets of pockets.  One on top and one on the bottom.

Turn the whole piece over to the wrong side and trim the excess fabric if there is any.

Step 5: How to Make an Easy Manicure Kit

Fuse the fusible fleece to the outer piece.  If you are unfamiliar with fusible fleece it is simple to install. It generally comes with instructions.  If not, the non fleece side has a heat activated glue.  Place that non fleece side to the wrong side of your fabric and press with a hot iron.  The glue will fuse the fleece to the fabric so that they can be treated as one.

Center the ribbon on the right side of the outer fabric.  Sew a 2″ rectangle to secure it to the outer fabric.

Step 7: How to Make an Easy Manicure Kit

Place the outer fabric on top of the inner fabric right sides together making sure that the ribbon is in the middle.  Sew around the entire kit making sure not to catch the ribbon and  leaving an opening at the bottom for turning using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 8: How to Make an Easy Manicure Kit

Turn the kit right sides out through the opening.  Press.  Topstitch around the entire kit including the opening. Fill it with your manicure essentials and you are now finished.
