How to Make Cat Mug Rugs

How to Make Cat Mug Rugs

How to make a cat mug rug

I have this cute summer kitten fabric that I wanted to use.  I came across this idea to make these cute cat mug rugs but the fabric just didn’t work.  The pattern was too big.  But I liked the idea of making these cat mug rugs that I got from Coco’s Loft.  A project doesn’t get any easier than this one.  You don’t even have to be a quilter to make these.  All you need is beginning sewing skills to create these cute cat mug rugs. Of course you can do some quilting on yours if want but I didn’t see the necessity.  This project only requires some scrap fabric, a little batting, standard sewing supplies and just a few minutes of time to complete.

Definitely search your stash for scraps for this one. There is no reason to purchase fabrics for this project if you have them on hand.  They require such a small amount.  You could always go to JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores, Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com if you don’t have fabrics on hand but this is a scrap busting project if there ever was one.  I used scraps from other projects that I had previously gotten at Joann.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

step 3: Stitch your fabrics

Using a 1/4″ seam allowance sew around the fabrics leaving an opening at the bottom for turning.  Clip the corners of the ears without cutting through the stitching.

step 4: Turn your fabrics

Turn your fabrics right sides out through the opening you left in the bottom.  Poke the ears out using a chop stick or my favorite device, That Purple Thing.  You can get That Purple thing in my Amazon Shop here.  Press.

step 5: Sew the Opening Closed

Sew the opening closed using ladder stitch.  I like ladder stitch because it is virtually invisible.  It is simple to sew.  If you are unfamiliar with ladder stitch take a look at this video.

step 6: Top Stitch

Top stitch around the edge.  You have now completed your mug rug unless you would like to add some additional quilting.
