How to Make Embroidery Hoop Christmas Ornaments

How to Make Embroidery Hoop Christmas Ornaments.  I love making Christmas ornaments and this year I have made several.  Among the ornaments I have made are these adorable embroidery hoop ornaments.  They are simple to make and inexpensive.  I used three different techniques for my ornaments but there are a lot of different possibilities.  They only require small embroidery hoops, some fabric and craft supplies.

I used 3″ embroidery hoops for my ornaments.  They are quite small so some of the techniques can be a little fidgity.  I chose to use craft buttons for one of my ornaments which was very simple to do.  For the next one I simply used craft paint.  Finally, I used felt and ricrac for the third ornament.  The third one took a bit more time as the pieces were very small and needed to be sewn to the fabric.  While it is a bit fidgity it is really simple to do.  Just take your time with this one.

  • Black embroidery floss
  • Red thread
  • Yellow 1/8″ ribbon
  • Red, White and Green craft buttons

Button Embroidery Hoop

Step 1: Hoop the Fabric

Take a square of fabric that is a bit larger than the hoop.  You will see that the hoop has two piece; a larger and smaller hoop held together with tension from a screw. Unscrew the screw slightly and remove the small hoop.  Place the large hoop on your work surface.  Lay your fabric square on top of the large hoop then place the small hoop into the large hoop sandwiching the fabric.  Tighten the screw.  Trim off any excess fabric.  Turn the hoop over so the smooth side of the fabric is facing you. I used an ecru colored fabric for this technique but you could use any color you like.

Step 2: Lay out the Buttons

I laid my buttons in the shape of a Christmas tree.  I started with the first layer and glued them to the fabric using hot glue.  Once the first layer in the shape of the tree was done I added more buttons on top to add texture.

Step 3: Add the bow

I added a bow made from the 1/8″ ribbon to the top of my tree.  Once the bow is added take another piece of ribbon and thread it through the screw area to act as a hanger and you have finished your button hoop ornament.

Craft Paint Embroidery Hoop

Step 1: Hoop the Fabric

Following the previous instructions, hoop the fabric.  I used a red and black houndstooth for this project but you could use a plaid as well.

Step 2: Center the stencil

Take your stencil and center it on the smooth side of your hoop and tape down.

Step 3: Stencil the Fabric

Add white paint to a stencil brush and dab it onto a paper towel.  Dab the white paint onto the stencil making sure that you are not getting any paint under the stencil itself.  The brush should be relatively dry so that it does not bleed under the stencil.  Remove the stencil and let the paint dry.  I added some 3d sparkly snowflake stickers on mine but you can leave your plain if you like. You have finished your craft paint embroidery hoop.

Felt  Embroidery Hoop

Step 1: Hoop the Fabric

Following the previous instructions, hoop the fabric.  I used a light blue cotton for this project but you could use any color you like.

Step 2: Add the ricrac

Add the red mini ric rac to the edge of the hoop.  I simply followed the feel of the inner hoop to sew on my ric rac.  It was really very simple to do.  I hand stitched everything on this little ornament so it was easy.

Step 3: Add the Gingerbread man

Cut out the gingerbread man from the light brown felt and center on the hoop.  I used a little spray fabric adhesive to hold it.  Stitch it to the fabric using white embroidery floss.

Step 4: Add the embellishments

Add ric rac to the arms and legs and a bow made from the 1/8″ ribbon to the neck of the gingerbread man.  Once you have completed those embellishments add the buttons and eyes using french knots.  If you are unfamiliar with how to do a french knot follow this video.  Backstitch a mouth and you have completed the felt embroidery hoop.
