How to Make Floating Halloween Cheesecloth Ghosts

How to Make FLOATING Halloween Cheesecloth Ghosts

Need a fun Halloween decorating idea?  These Floating Halloween cheesecloth ghosts are the perfect addition to any home decor during the Halloween season.  They are an easy and fun craft project that you can make yourself or with your kids.  You can make them spooky or spooky fun.  You can set them on a table or hang them from a ceiling.  Either way they will add that little bit of ghostly ghoul to your Halloween decorating scheme.

All you really need for this project are a few household items and a little bit of time.  There are actually two methods of creating this project.  You can create your own starch liquid or use spray starch.  I didn’t have any spray starch on hand so I made my own starch liquid using corn starch that I had in my pantry.  I am sure that the spray starch would have been easier but I like to use what I have on hand.  The cheesecloth can be purchased in any supermarket though I got mine at Amazon.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What you will need Floating Ghosts

Step 1: Make the starch

Take two cups of water and place it into a microwave safe bowl.  Add one cup of cornstarch to the water and mix thoroughly.  Microwave in 30 second increments until the mixture thickens.  It may take up to 2 minutes to complete this process.  Set aside to let cool but do not allow it to get cold.  You could use spray starch instead of this mixture if you like.

Step 2: Set up the stand

I used a smooth Styrofoam ball and a small thermos and pill container to act as the mold and the stand.  It was important that my ghosts have a round head so the ball was perfect for this purpose.  You could use any round object for your ghost.

Step 3: Cut the Cheesecloth

My cheesecloth came in a long sheet.  I laid it over my form and stand to get the fit that I wanted and cut it accordingly.

Step 4: soak the cheesecloth

Smush the cheesecloth thoroughly in the cornstarch mixture.  The cornstarch is pretty thick at this point so you will need to knead it with your hands to get it soaked all the way through.  Skip this step if you are using spray starch.

Step 5: Layer the Cheesecloth

Layer the cheesecloth over your round object so that it completely covers the object and it puddles on the counter.  It is important that some of the cheesecloth puddle at the bottom because this is what the ghost will stand on when it is finished.  If you are using spray starch for your project layer the cheesecloth then spray the starch over the cheesecloth so that it is completely soaked.

Step 6:  Let Dry

Let the ghost dry.  It may take overnight for it to completely dry.

Step 7: finish the ghost

Once the starch has dried and the cheesecloth is stiff remove it from the form and stand.  It will now stand up on its own.  It will actually look as if it is floating.  Cut two circles for the eyes and glue them to the ghost. If you would like to make a girl ghost add an orange bow to finish the look.  You have now completed your Floating Halloween Cheesecloth Ghost.

  1. I don’t know how this makes sense. You wrote “Microwave in 30 minute increments until the mixture thickens. It may take up to 2 minutes to complete this process.” Can you explain? I am thinking you meant 30 second increments???

Looking Forward to Reading your Thoughts on this Project
