I decided to create a separate post for this cute little purse frame coin purse.  It is a fun beginner coin purse that I originally made from upcyled jeans.  Because it only requires scraps of fabric it is a perfect little epicycle or scrap buster project.  This little coin purse is so cute and simple to make.  It is a beginner sewing project that anyone with basic sewing skills can make.  It really only takes about 15 minutes to sew these coin purses once you get the hang of it.  They make perfect little gifts as well.

When I made the video for this project I chose a fabric that I found in my garage that I am sure that I a=have had for over 20 years but it was just too cute not to use for this project. You could head to your stash or scraps to create this fun project but if you really want to purchase fabric for it head to Hobby Lobby, Fabric.com, onlinefabricstore.net or Joann’s to get exactly what you need.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  As an Amazon associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What you will Need:

  • Pattern
  • coin purse frames — I used an 8.5 mm or a 3.3″ frame
  • Scraps of Jeans fabric
  • Scraps of Lining fabric
  • Iron on Applique
  • Standard Sewing Supplies

Step 1: Stitch the Bottoms

Cut two pieces of Jeans fabric and two pieces of lining fabric using the pattern piece.  Sew the jeans fabric together using a 1/4″ seam allowance at the bottom straight edge and the lining fabric in the same way.  Leave an opening in the bottom of the lining fabric for turning.  (I did not do this in the photo but did in the video.)

Step 2: Stitch the Sides

Sew up the sides of both the Jeans and the lining fabrics.

Step 3: Box the Coin Purse Corners

Then box the bottoms of both the jeans and the lining by matching the bottom seams with the side seams again sewing with a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 4: Join the Lining and Jeans Together

Turn the Jeans right sides out.  Insert the jeans into the lining which has the right side in so that they are right sides together.  Sew around the top of the purse.  After the top of purse is sewn, pull the jeans part of the purse through the bottom of the lining. Stitch the opening in the lining closed using ladder stitch.  Stuff the lining into the outer bag.

Step 5: Attach the Purse Frame

Attach the top of the purse to the metal purse frame and sew it through the holes provided.  I used invisible thread but you can use any color you like.  You can also purchase metal purse frames that will glue into place rather than being sewn. You can find many sizes and shapes of coin purse frames at my affiliate, Amazon.com by clicking the link.
