How to Sew a Japanese Knot Bag

 

Ever wonder how to sew a Japanese Knot bag?  I came across this knot bag pattern from The Chilly Dog and just had to make it and show it to you all.  It is a fun and quick little project that you can sew, as usual, using remnants.  I have a giant stash full of remnants that I purchase for half price and am always looking for projects to make with them.  This Japanese knot bag was perfect. This reversible Japanese bag pattern is simple to make and requires only beginner sewing skills.  You should be able to complete this project in about an hour.  I would recommend quilting cotton or another woven fabric for this project.

What you will Need:

• Japanese Knot Bag Pattern
• 2/3 yd of outer fabric
• 2/3 yd of lining fabric
• Standard sewing supplies

Step 1: How to Sew a Japanese Knot Bag

Tape the pattern pieces together.  Cut two each of the outer fabric and the lining fabric.  Mark the arrows onto the wrong side of the fabrics.

Step 2: How to Sew a Japanese Knot Bag

With right sides together sew the ends of the long strap together on both the outer fabric and the lining fabric using a 1/4″ seam allowance.This will give you one very long strip with a body on each end of both the outer fabric and the lining fabric. 

Step 3: How to Sew a Japanese Knot Bag

Open up both pieces so that you have one really long strip with a bag body on each end. With right sides together pin the outer fabric side of the long strap together and the inner U section together with the lining.  Sew the outer long strap between the arrows and the entire U section and inner long strap using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 4: How to Sew a Japanese Knot Bag

Turn the bag right side out through the long strap.  This is a little fidgety but take your time and it will happen with no problems. Press.

Step 5: How to Sew a Japanese Knot Bag

With right sides together sew the ends of the short strap together.

Step 6: How to Sew a Japanese Knot Bag

With right sides together sew the bottom outer fabrics together and the bottom lining fabrics together from arrow to arrow.  This should leave an opening on the short strap side for turning.

Step 7: How to Sew a Japanese Knot Bag

Turn the bag right sides out through the opening.  Press.  Close the opening in the short side of the strap using ladder stitch and top stitch around the top of the bag. If you are unfamiliar with ladder stitch check out this video.

Push the long strap through the opening in the short strap and you have finished your Japanese knot bag.
