How to Sew a Padded Picture Frame

I came across this padded picture frame project on YouTube and thought I would share it with you. It is a really cute little project for the beginner sewist and takes just minutes to make. The best part about this project is picking the fabrics to really make your photos pop. Travel fabrics for travel photos, kids fabrics for children, whatever works for your particular photograph. You can really make this project fun. This is all about sewing straight lines if you have trouble with that check out my tutorial on how to sew straight lines.

This project only needs a small amount of fabric depending on the size of the frame you would like to make. You will need three pieces of fabric. I used fabrics from my stash that I had purchased from JOANN Fabric & Craft Storesbut you could head to fabric.com or onlinefabricstore.net to get exactly what you need for this project. How to Make a Padded Picture frame

What you will need: How to Make a Padded Picture Frame

• 1 outer, backing and back piece that measures
• 1 Pellon SF 101 Piece that measures
• Polyester fiberfil
• Clear vinyl (Optional)

Step 1: Cut Your Fabrics

Cut all of your fabrics and interfacing to measure 8″ x 10″

Step 2: Fuse the Interfacing

Fuse the SF 101 to the wrong side of the back fabric of the picture frame. Set aside.

Step 3: Measure for the Opening

Take the backing fabric and draw the opening for the picture. To do this find the center of the fabric. Using your photo as a template draw a box in the center of the backing fabric. Draw another box 1/4″ inside the box you just drew.

Step 4: Stitch the Outer Fabric to the Backing Fabric

Place the outer fabric and the backing fabric right sides together. Stitch the two pieces of fabric together around the 1/4″ box you just drew.

Step 5: Cut out the Opening

Open a slit in the center of the box. Cut toward each corner without cutting through the stitching. Trim off the excess points of the triangles you have created . Press the edges then turn so that the pieces are right sides out. press again. so that the corners are sharpened the fabrics are even.

Step 5: Add the Back Fabric

Place the back fabric right sides together with the fabrics with the opening and stitch all the way around using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Clip the corners. Turn right sides out.

Step 6: Stuff the Picture Frame

Using an erasable pen mark a 3/8″ seam allowance around the outer fabric measuring from the inside opening. Take the polyester fiberfil and stuff the edges of the picture frame. You don’t need too much stuffing here. Stitch around the 3/8″ line you drew. Cut away any excess stuffing. Insert the picture and the optional piece of Clear vinyl and you have finished your padded picture frame.
