How to Sew a Simple Belt Bag

How to Make a Simple Belt bag

I love these belt bags.  They are so convenient and easy to sew.  They are also perfect to toss a few things in and walk around hands free.  This is a super simple sewing project with terrific results.  It is also a beginner sewing project though you will have to add a button hole to this project.  If you are uncomfortable with sewing a button hole on your machine you can always do it by hand but most machines have a button hole attachment that makes it very easy to do.  I saw a pattern similar to this on Pinterest but could not find the person to attribute it too. I created my own tutorial as I was not sure how the designer intended it to go together.  So here we go.

I used denim for the exterior fabric of my simple belt bag and a nice cotton print for the lining. These fabrics were purchased  at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores but you could head to Hobby Lobby, Fabric.com or Onlinefabricstore.net to get the perfect fabrics for your simple belt bag project. What you will Need Belt Bag

Step 1: Cut your fabrics

Print the pattern pieces. Tape piece A and piece B together matching the arrows. Cut two outer pieces of fabric from the main piece and one outer and one lining from the pocket piece.

Step 2: Stitch the pocket

Take the outer and lining pieces of pocket piece C and place them right sides together.  Stitch along the top edge using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Turn right sides out and press.  Top stitch along the top edge for strength and a more professional look.

Step 3: Add the pocket to the outer main piece

Place the pocket piece you just stitched so that the lining side is facing the right side of the main fabric and stitch along the sides and bottom to secure using a 1/8″ seam allowance.

Add the pocket

Step 4: Add the back of the belt bag

Place the other main piece right sides together with the first piece and stitch all the way around using a 1/4″ seam allowance but leave an opening at the bottom for turning the belt bag. Clip the curves.

Step 5: Turn the belt Bag

Turn the belt bag right sides out through the opening you left at the bottom of the bag.  I found the easiest way to turn the bag was to push from the top to the bottom using a poking tool like That Purple Thang that you can get here.

Step 6: Top Stitch

Top stitch all around the bag making sure to enclose the opening you left for turning.

Step 7: Add the button Hole

Place a 1″ button hole at the top pf the tongue of the bag using your button hole attachment or by hand.

Create the button hole

Step 8: Add the button

Place a button on the front of the pocket piece in the center about 1″ down from the top.  Fill the pocket with keys, money and ID.  Fold the tongue over your belt and head out hands free.
