Learn to Sew Candy Cane Ornaments
I love making Christmas ornaments and this year I decided to sew up some candy canes. These candy cane ornaments are a beginner sewing project that anyone with basic sewing skills can make in minutes. They are bright and colorful and a lot of fun to make. There is a free pattern with this project that can be downloaded from the link. All you need is a little fabric and some twine or ribbon to make this fun little sewing project. Sewing for Christmas is always fun so let’s get started.
I used fabrics that I had on hand purchased from Hobby Lobby and JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores but you could head to Fabric.com or onlinefabricastore.net for the perfect fabrics for your candy cane ornaments. What you will Need: Learn to Sew Candy Cane Ornaments
- Pattern you can get by clicking on this link
- 1/4 yd red and white fabric
- Polyester fiberfill
- Twine or ribbon for the hanger
- Standard sewing supplies
Step 1: Cut out the fabric
Using the pattern piece cut out two mirror image fabric pieces. For beginners: this should be natural when the fabric is folded and the wrong sides are facing. Cut a piece of ribbon or twine that measures 6″ for the hanger.
Step 2: Stitch the hanger to the fabric
Fold the hanger piece in half. Place the hanger so that it is facing down in the center of the top of one of the candy cane pieces. Stitch to secure.
Step 3: Stitch the candy canes
Place the candy cane pieces right sides together with the hanger facing inward and stitch all the way around using a 1/4″ seam allowance leaving the bottom of the candy cane open for stuffing
Step 4: Stuff the candy canes
Stuff the candy canes as full as you like.
Step 5: Stitch the opening closed
Stitch the opening closed using ladder stitch. If you are unfamiliar with ladder stitch it is a hand stitch that looks invisible when it is complete. Take a look at this video to learn how.
