I found this terrific fabric by Tim Holtz that replicates airmail stamps and it reminded me of mailing a letter to a far off land so I thought I would make pouch with a strap for my iPad that represents a letter.  Needless to say my idea wasn’t original.  While researching additional fabrics, I came across a design over at the Coats and Clark website that was really cute and reasonably easy to make that I thought I would share with you.  I used the postal fabric I found along with some remnants from my stash to create a terrific mail pouch tablet travel case.  I got this fabric at Fabric.com if you would like to buy it just click on the link and type in Mail Fabric.  You should find Tim Holtz Eclectic Collection to find this fabric.

What you will need:

  • 1/2 yd. Tim Holtz Eclectic Elements Correspondence fabric
  • 1/4 yd. Lining fabric
  • 1/4 yd. Striped fabric for binding
  • 1/4 yd. Foam interfacing
  • 2 3/4″ D Rings
  • 2 3/4″ Swivel Clips
  • 1 Magnetic snap
  • Standard Sewing Supplies

Step 1: Mail Pouch Tablet Travel Case

Cut 1 piece each of outer fabric, lining fabric and foam 24″ x 12″.  Cut 1 piece of outer fabric 3″ x the width of the fabric (WOF) and 2 strips from the coordinating stripe 2 1/2″ x WOF.

Step 2: Mail Pouch Tablet Travel Case

Place the outer fabric onto the foam and clip or pin.  Use a clear ruler to draw 2″ wide lines diagonally across the fabric using a frixion or other disappearing pen so that a diamond pattern is created.  Cut the quilted piece to 22 1/2″ x 11″.

Step 3: Mail Pouch Tablet Travel Case

Sew on top of the lines through both layers to create the quilted effect for the travel pouch.  Once you have completed the quilting, measure down 5″ from the top on both sides and mark.  Mark the center of the top.  Draw lines from each 5″ mark to the center mark and cut on those lines to create a pointed tip to your pouch.  Use the quilted piece to cut the lining to the same dimensions.

Step 4: Mail Pouch Tablet Travel Case

Lay the quilted piece and the lining piece side by side.  Measure 1 1/2″ from the point of the lining fabric and place a piece of interfacing. Attach the male side of the snap to the lining through the interfacing.  Once the prongs have been secured, place a piece of fusible fleece over them to prevent rubbing on the fabric.  Measure 3 3/4″ from the bottom of the outer fabric in the center and place the female side of the snap in the same way you placed the male side.  You could also use Velcro as they did in the original version of this pattern but I prefer the magnetic snaps.

Step 5: Mail Pouch Tablet Travel Case

Once the snaps have been added, stack the lining and the quilted piece wrong sides together and baste.  Create your own bias binding or use pre-made binding.  I created my own for this project following my make your own bias binding tutorial.  I used a stars and stripes design remnant that I had on hand.

Step 6: Mail Pouch Tablet Travel Case

Fold the bottom up toward the point 8″ keeping the sides aligned.  Press and baste.  You can serge or zig-zag the edges to make them easier for binding.  Attach the bias binding around all of the raw edges to finish.  In this case, straight grain binding will work because there are no curves but you will not get the same diagonal effect that you will with bias biding if you are using a stripe.

Once the binding has been completed, fold down the top like an envelope and close the magnetic snap.  Add 2 D-rings to the fold of the top part of the pouch near each edge of the binding and sew using buttonhole stitch.

Step 8: Mail Pouch Tablet Travel Case

Create the strap in the usual way by folding the 3 1/2″ x WOF strip of fabric in half lengthwise wrong sides together and press.  Open the strip and fold the edges inward toward the folded center and press.  Fold the center again to create the strap.  Top stitch up both sides of the strap. Add the swivel clips to each end of the strap.  Attach the strap to the D-rings and your pouch is complete.
