Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Ever wonder what to do with all of those Altoids tins?  I never want to throw them away so I thought I would make an Altoids tin mini clutch that I could toss in my purse to carry a few necessities that tend to get lost on the bottom or in a black hole somewhere.  Since I have been making polymer clay projects recently I thought this would be a perfect project to use my newly found polymer clay marbleizing techniques on.  I needed something to cover up the embossed Altoids label on the top of the tin. Polymer clay seemed the perfect solution.

Polymer clay is inexpensive and easy to work with.  It does not require any special tools and there are thousands of different designs that can be created. I chose the simple marbleizing technique for my tin.  If you have never worked with polymer clay just follow this tutorial to get a very basic working knowledge of the product.  You can find polymer clay at any craft store or on Amazon.  For the marbleizing technique you will need 3-4 different colors.  Choose any colors you like.  I chose pink, purple, white and a little black for mine.  To complete this project you need just a few other items that are very inexpensive as well.

What you will Need:

Step 1: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Spray paint the exterior of the tin in gold. You could also paint the interior but I didn’t bother.

Step 2: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Create your polymer clay. You will notice if you are using Sculpy that it comes in sections.  I just took one section of the white, pink, and purple, and a half section of black.  Roll each of the colors into a roll.

Step 3: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Twist the rolls together like a candy cane.

Step 4: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Roll out the roll to make it smooth and combine the colors.

Step 5: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Fold the roll in half and twist again. Roll it out and repeat until you get the marbling that you like.  Fold up the clay into a ball.

Step 6: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Roll out the ball using a glass jar so that the clay is flat and you can see the marbling that you want.

Step 7: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Lay the clay on top of the Altoids tin.

Step 8: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Using a sharp craft knife cut around the top of the tin to trim off the excess clay and add the bead.

Step 9: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Place the tin in a 275 degree oven and bake for 15 minutes.  Let cool.

Step 10: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Spray the clay with the high gloss polyurethane to make it nice and shiny.

Step 11: Make an Altoids Tin Mini Clutch

Fill the mini clutch with those small things you don’t want to lose and put it in your purse.
