Make diy fabric baskets

I love fabric baskets for storing all of my little things.  Anyone that follows this blog knows how much I love color.  I know that I can go and purchase these baskets but I can’t get the colors that I want to match the decor in my home. So I made them myself and so can you.  This is a super simple process for making fabric baskets any size you want. If you have basic sewing skills you can make this pattern. Choose any fabric that fits your decor.  Head over to hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to find exactly the fabric that you want for your DIY fabric baskets.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What you Will Need:

  • 1/2 yd exterior fabric or more depending on size of basket – I used decorator weight fabric
  • 1/2 yd lining fabric or more depending on size of basket – I used decorator weight fabric but you could use quilting weight
  • Fusible Medium-weight interfacing – I used Pellon 808
  • Standard sewing supplies

What you will Need Baskets

Step 1: Make DIY Fabric Baskets

Cut two 18″ square exterior, interior, and interfacing pieces. This size is for the large sized basket. I made a smaller basket using a 14″ square.

Step 2: Make DIY Fabric Baskets

Fuse the interfacing to each of the squares of exterior fabric.  You do not need to add interfacing to the lining.  Follow the manufacturers instructions on how to fuse the interfacing.  If you are unfamiliar with fusible interfacing it is a simple process to fuse it to your exterior fabric. There is a glue side and a non glue side.  you can see that one side is shiny and the other side is flat.  The shiny side is the glue side.  Place the glue side to the wrong side of the outer fabric and press with a hot iron until the glue melts and fuses with the fabric and the two pieces can be treated as one.

Step 3: Make DIY Fabric Baskets

Stitch three sides of the outer fabric together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Stitch the lining fabric in the same way except that you should leave a 4″ opening on the bottom edge for turning.  You should have two 18″ squares sewn together.

Step 4: Make DIY Fabric Baskets

Box the corners.  If you are unfamiliar with how to box corners it is a simple process. While the two pieces are still wrong sides out, take the bottom seam and match it to the side seam. This creates a triangle.  Measure down until the cross ways measurement is  4 1/2″ and draw a line using a frixion pen or other marker.  Sew across the line.  Cut off the excess from the corners so that there remains a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Box the outer fabric corners and the lining corners.  Note: If making the 14″ basket measure so the cross ways measurement is 3 1/2″.

Step 5: Make DIY Fabric Baskets

Turn the exterior fabric right sides out.  Place the exterior basket inside the lining basket right sides together. Press.  Stitch along the top of the basket. I like to use wonder clips for this process but you could use pins to make sure that the seams are lined up.  If you don’t have any wonder clips I recommend that you get them here.

Step 6: Make DIY Fabric Baskets

Turn the basket through the opening you left in the lining. Push the lining into the outer basket and press the seam.  Top stitch around the top of the basket for a more professional look.

Step 7: Make DIY Fabric Baskets

Sew the opening in the lining closed using ladder stitch.  Fold the top down so that you can see the lining fabric on the outside of the basket for a contrasting look.  You have now completed your DIY fabric basket.
