New Years Wishes Felt Fortune Cookies

New Years Wishes Felt Fortune Cookies

I wanted to make something special for my News Years Eve guests to take home with them and came across this adorable little sewing project that was perfect for my needs.  I saw many examples of this project so it is not a new idea but giving them out as party favors with positive New Years wishes seems to be something unique. People have tired of sweet treats by this time and are looking forward to New Years resolutions.  These felt fortune cookies are the perfect way to encourage resolutions and give positive wishes for the New Year without adding those extra calories.  These cookies require no baking skills and only very basic sewing skills to complete.  This is truly a beginner project that anyone with a sewing machine can accomplish in minutes.

I used felt rectangles for my project. You can find them at any fabric or craft store or at Amazon through the link in a multitude of colors. They are very inexpensive and easy to manage. I also used two different colors of felt for each of my cookies for contrast. You can use the same colors if you like it is totally up to you. Keep in mind that felt does not ravel so you do not have to worry about finishing the edges.  Let’s get started on these New Years Wishes Felt Fortune Cookies. Step 1: New Years Wishes Felt Fortune Cookies

I used an extra large cup for my template and a sharpie to draw around it.  I drew two circles on each felt rectangle.

Cut out the circles using your scissors

Step 3: New Years Wishes Felt Fortune Cookies

Match two circles of different colors together and sew around the perimeter using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  I used a decorative zigzag stitch to sew mine.  You can use any stitch you like even a straight stitch if you want.

Step 4: New Years Wishes Felt Fortune Cookies

Once the circles have been joined together fold them in half like a taco and sew down the middle starting at the folded edge and stopping about 1/2″ from the top and backstitching. You will have two flaps on each side of the line you have just sewn. Remember to place the color you want on the outside of the finished cookie on the inside in this step.

Step 5: New Years Wishes Felt Fortune Cookies

Take one of the flaps and fold it back.  In this case I folded the green side back.  Turn the cookie over to the other side and fold the other flap back so that the two flaps meet sort of like a clam shell snitp off any excess threads.  You have completed your felt fortune cookies.

Step 6: New Years Wishes Felt Fortune Cookies

Either hand write or print out a variety of New Years wishes and encouragements on the white paper.  Make sure that you will be able to cut the paper into strips that measure about 1/2″ x 5″ to fit into the cookie like a fortune.  Of course the length of the paper depends on the size of the cookie you are making but the 1/2″ width should fit perfectly.
