Paint a Rustic Shamrock

Paint a Rustic Shamrock

I found this plain wooden shamrock at Joann’s the other day and wanted to paint it a farmhouse rustic style.  I really wanted to stain it but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on stain so I decided to use paint and make it look like stain instead. How hard could it be? The answer is not hard at all.  It literally took me 15 minutes to paint this shamrock exactly the way I wanted it.  I used inexpensive acrylic paints that I had on hand and that are inexpensive to purchase.   You can still see the grain of the wood which was the effect I was going for in this project.  This was all about rustic for me.  So how do you make paint look like stain? Lets find out.

What you will Need:

  • 1 wooden shamrock
  • 1 wooden word
  • Dark brown paint
  • Lighter brown paint
  • Green Paint
  • Cream color paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Paper towels
  • Hot Glue

Step 1: Paint a Rustic Shamrock

My shamrock had grooves already cut into the wood like wainscoting if yours doesn’t, divide your shamrock in sections using painter’s tape. Decide how you want your colors to appear on your shamrock.

Step 2: Paint a Rustic Shamrock

Start with your first color.  I painted the paint directly onto the wood.  I immediately coated it with a light layer of water and wiped it off using a paper towel.  The paint and the water will come off leaving a stain like appearance on the wood.

Step 3: Paint a Rustic Shamrock

Repeat the process for each of the colors that you are using in your shamrock.  I didn’t wait any time before moving onto the next color because the paint is pretty dry when you wipe it off.  If you are using painter’s tape, you will have to alternate to accommodate for the tape.

Step 4: Paint a Rustic Shamrock

I wanted to add a message to my shamrock so I decided to add the word Family since our family has Irish heritage.  I painted the word using the cream colored paint and hot glued it to my shamrock.  My rustic painted shamrock was now complete.
