Quick and Easy Fabric Trays

quick and easy fabric trays

I came across this fabulous idea on how to make quick and easy fabric trays and wanted to share it with you.  You can use these trays anywhere to hold keys, trinkets, jewelry and more.  It only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish to make these terrific trays so give them a try if you have some scraps of fabric laying around your stash.  I used old jeans and a fat quarter that I had on hand along with some colorful craft buttons to complete the look.

What you will Need:

  • 10″ x 10″ piece of heavy weight fabric for the outside
  • 10″ x 10″ piece of quilting weight fabric for the inside
  • 10″ x 10″ piece of cotton batting
  • 8 assorted craft buttons or rivets
  • Standard sewing supplies

What you will Need

Step 1: Quick and Easy Fabric Trays

Cut out your squares of fabric.  Layer them with the batting on the bottom the interior fabric on top right side up and the outer fabric facing down.  Square up your sandwich and cut the pieces down to 9″ x 9″.

Step 2: Quick and Easy Fabric Trays

Using your presser foot as a guide sew around the perimeter of the square leaving an opening for turning.  Clip the corners making sure not to cut into the stitching.

Step 3: Quick and Easy Fabric Trays

Turn the square of fabric right sides out.  You should have your outer fabric on the bottom with the batting in the middle and the inner fabric face up on the top.  Poke out the corners and press.

Step 4: Quick and Easy Fabric Trays

Turn under the opening and pin.  Top stitch all around the square enclosing the raw edges of the opening using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 5: Quick and Easy Fabric Trays

You should now have a nice neat square.  Pinch each of the corners together and pin making sure the corners are even all the way around.

Step 6: Quick and Easy Fabric Trays

Sew the buttons on the sides of the corners that you just pinched making sure that there is a button on each side of the pinched corner.  You could also use rivets for this.  Do this for all four corners and you are finished with your quick and easy fabric trays.
