How to Make a Winter Quilted Placemat

How to Make a Winter Quilted Placemat

Once again I have been using my EQ8 software to create this adorable winter quilted placemat.  I love this software. It is so fun to work with and you can create lots of quilts when you have no experience like me.  This is a simple placemat that is fun for the winter season.  You could make this more Christmas themed if you like by changing out the colors and the appliqué but I wanted to go more of a winter theme for this year.   I just love how it came out.  I Have attached all of the pieces that go with this placemat project so it should be pretty simple to put together.  Just follow the step-by-step instructions to piece this project and quilt it in the end.

I typically use remnants in my projects here at Sew Very Crafty because they are 50% off but I didn’t have quite what I wanted in my stash for this project so I purchased everything I needed at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores.  I am sure that you can go to your local fabric or quilt store to get the perfect fabrics for your project or head over to Fabric.com or onlinefabricstore.net.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them I may receive a small commission at no cost to you.

What you will Need: How to Make a Winter Quilted Placemat

Step 1: Cut your Fabrics

Cut your fabrics according to the pattern.  You can use any color you like but I have marked the colors that I used for my project. In addition cut two 2 1/2″ x WOF strips for the binding.  (WOF = Width of Fabric)

Step 2: Appliqué the Pieces

In order to appliqué the pieces you will need to use Heat n Bond. Trace the appliqué pieces onto the Heat n Bond but cut off the seam allowances for the appliqué pieces. Also make sure that the letters are facing the opposite direction sir that when you place them right sides up they will be facing the right way.  Place the Heat n Bond to the wrong side of the fabric pieces you have chosen for the appliqué.  Press through the paper to secure.  Cut out the Pieces.  Remove the paper backing and place the pieces in the center of the plain white fabric pieces.  Press to fuse to the fabric.

Step 3: Stitch the Centers Together

Stitch the two Center squares together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 3: Add the Inner Border

Start by adding the top and bottom border pieces first using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Then add the side border pieces to complete the inner border.

Step 5: Layer the Winter Quilted Placemats

Place the backing fabric on your workspace wrong side up.  Place the same sized batting on top of the backing fabric.  Lay the pieced placemat right sides up on the batting creating a quilt sandwich.  Spray basting spray between the layers to secure.  Make sure there are no wrinkles in the fabric.

Step 6: Quilt the Winter Placemats

Quilt the placemats however you like.  I just used an all over loop design for my quilting.  Trim the placemat.

Step 7: Bind the Winter Quilted Placemats

Using 2 1/2″ strips of dark blue fabric bind the placemats following this video. Once you have bound your placemat you are finished.  Make as many as you like.
