How to Make a Patchwork Fabric Ornament

I just love these patchwork ornaments. They are so easy to make using scrap fabrics and some fleece or batting. I thought I would share the process for how to make a patchwork fabric ornament with you in this tutorial. They look really nice when you are finished and they don’t take a lot of time to complete. I have done a lot of different Christmas ornaments on the site and if you would like to see the check out my holiday projects here.

I purchased some smooth styrofoam balls from JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores and used some fat quarters that I purchased from the Fat Quarter Shop for the fabrics. Batting was used to give my patchwork fabric ornaments some dimension. I used ribbon to cover the joints.

What you will Need: How to Make a Patchwork Fabric Ornament

Step 1: Divide the Ball into Quarters or Eighths

Using the rubber bands or string divide the ball into quarters or eights. Draw lines following the rubber bands or string using the pencil. Remove the rubber bands or string. Score the lines with the pencil.

Divide the ball

Step 2: Deepen the Grooves

Using the craft knife, deepen the grooves without widening them. I like a craft knife for this purpose but you could use a steak knife for this.

Step 3: Cut the Fabrics

Using the pattern piece cut the fabric pieces in two different fabrics.

Step 4: Add the Fabrics

Place each fabric on each slice in the center one at a time. Push the excess fabric into the groove using the dull side of the craft knife or a butter knife to secure the fabric in place. You can also place a small amount of adhesive on the fabric as well.

Step 5: Glue the Ribbon

Starting at the top of the ornament glue the ribbon around the ball over the separations between the segments. Repeat for each segment. Place a pearl head pin at the bottom where the ribbon crosses for decoration. Tie a bow at the top of the ornament.

Step 6: Add the Hanger

Using the same ribbon wrap it round a two pronged floral pin and tie a knot so that there is a loop at the top and push the pin into the top of the ornament. You have now finished your patchwork fabric ornament.
