What you will Need: How to Make a Reversible Square Tote Bag
- 1/2 yd outer and lining fabric
- 1/2 yd fusible foam
- 25 1/4″ of 1″ cotton webbing
- Standard sewing supplies
Step 1: Cut the Fabrics
Cut four outer and lining pieces each that measure 7 1/8″ x 14 5/8″. Cut four pieces of fusible foam to measure 6 1/4″ x 13 7/8″. Half the webbing.
Step 2: Cut the Foam
From one end of the foam measure up both sides 3 1/8″ and make a mark. Mark the bottom center. Draw diagonal lines from the 3 1/8″ mark to the center point on each side. Cut the lines you just drew. Go to the other end of the foam piece and on the left corner measure down 2 3/4″ and make a mark. Draw across the top 2 1/2″ and make another mark. Draw a curved line joining the two marks. Fold the foam in half lengthwise. Cut out the curve through all layers.
Step 3: Fuse the Foam
Place the foam on the wrong side of the outer fabric and fuse according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Leave a 3/8″ seam allowance on the top and bottom.
Step 4: Cut the Fabrics
Place the outer fabric on top off the lining fabric and cut out the fabrics so they match the foam shape leaving a 3/8″ seam allowance as you go. Square off the bottom tip. Clip the corners.
Step 5: Stitch the Outer Fabrics
Place one outer fabric right sides together with another outer fabric. Stitch along the side and bottom using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Repeat for the other two pieces.
Step 6: Add the Cotton Webbing
Place the Cotton webbing on the top handle piece and stitch using a 1/8″ seam allowance to secure.
Step 7: Join the Two outer Pieces
Place the two outer pieces right sides together matching the center seams. Stitch along the sides and bottom. Turn right sides out.
Step 8: Create the Lining
Create the lining in the same way you created the outer bag but leave an opening in the side for turning.
Step 9: Stitch the Bags Together
Place the outer bag into the lining bag so that they are right sides together. Match all of the seams. Stitch all the way around the topping a 3/8″ seam allowance.
Step 10: Turn Right Sides Out
Reach into the lining through the opening and turn the bag right sides out. Close the opening using ladder stitch or your machine. Stuff the lining into the outer bag and press.
Step 11: Topstitch
Topstitch around the top of the bag to secure the lining and you have finished your reversible square tote bag.
